Shin Murakami Lab PhD

Research Summary:
The lab's research focused on using Caenorhabditis elegans to elucidate the mechanisms behind age-related memory impairment (AMI). In particular, we focused on a proposed mechanism for AMI, oxidative stress caused by an imbalance between the generation and removal of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen-oxygen species (RNOS), which can cause aging through cell damage. By completing various behavioral assays we worked to better understand the role of oxidative stress in AMI and investigate potential treatment options in humans, such as osteopathic manipulative medicine.
