RESEARCH
Research Capstone Project – Asynchrony in Audiovisual Speech Integration among Infants at Risk for Autism and Cochlear Implant Patients
Student Research Assistant Sept ’15 – May ‘16
Under supervision of Dr. Michael Lewis and Dr. Minar
Abstract: Study in which a correlation amongst progression in audiovisual speech integration in well infants, infants at risk for autism and infants with cochlear implants was investigated; further exploration of the McGurk effect phenomenon in early child development.
Collected and analyzed initial research papers to find a correlation in statistics to formulate hypotheses
Assistance in lab set up for at risk infants, well infants, and cochlear implant infants
Scrubbed in for cochlear implant surgeries on infants
Applied MATLAB skills and statistics software to analyze data
Academic conference poster/podium presentation at Annual Pediatrics Day at Rutgers University
Completed final Capstone Research paper
Senior Research Project – “OcculoChair”: Utilizing Eye Movements to Control a Power Wheelchair
Team Member / Record Keeper Sept ’14 – May ‘15
Abstract: ALS, and quadriplegia are some in which the patients’ motor neurons are affected, leading to loss in functionality of nearly all voluntary muscles, but not eye muscles. The goal of the design was to create a power wheelchair for these patients, by utilizing the user’s eye movements as a control mechanism. Eye movements were tracked using a camera attached to a head mounted device. A microcomputer interpreted commands from rangefinders, stop button, and camera, sending signals to motor controllers, which with batteries, propelled the wheelchair. Each component was tested individually, and then connected.
Designed and constructed the head-mounted camera glasses making mechanical modifications utilizing a pulley system
Spearheaded construction of the motion component of the wheelchair integrating mechanical and electrical components
Academic conference poster presentation: Northeastern Bioengineering Conference at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute
Kessler Institute – Normal Gait: Differences in Gait Across Ages and Gender with Neuromuscular Diseases
Volunteer Research Intern June ’14 – Aug ‘14
Abstract: Under the supervision of Dr. Forrest, assisted in the early stages of a study using exoskeletal-assisted standing and walking robotics (ReWalk) in people with spinal cord injuries: ReWalk comprises a wearable brace support, a computer-based control system and motion sensors. The ReWalk exoskeleton allows user-initiated, independent, controlled walking that mimics the natural gait pattern.
Facilitated set-up of patients in the clinical study by placing electrodes on foot and ankle areas to obtain proper readings
Analyzed and interpreted gait patterns via voltage readings of electrodes at various anatomical locations using the Vicon software
