DBA / Project, Risk, Compliance, Audit Lead / Manager / SVP

Was originally hired in December 1985, as an IDMS DBA responsible for the firms trading systems. Responsibilities included the physical design, implementation, maintenance of IDMS, DB2, Focus and tableBase systems. Major database support functions involved database creation, enhancement, and troubleshooting of production, QA and test/development databases. For the last 20 years, extensively acted as IT project manager or technical lead for application teams in supporting rollouts, stress tests, disaster recovery tests and documenting benchmarks. Represented the IT or database groups in internal/external, security and SOX audits. Worked with compliance and audit teams on documenting best practices, participated in RCSA assessments, collecting evidence, written numerous procedures to mitigate risk, reviewed security and audit findings. Created classes and trained staff in the procedures that they needed to follow (skilled in the use of Microsoft products). Last task worked on was on setting up a new Customer Architecture Support team for IT (the group would be a liaison between IT groups, applications and end users, discussions and questions relating to technology, scheduled changes, problems and outages).

Provided 29 years of service as DBA, project leader/technical lead or DB manager (DBA and DB Systems) with P&L responsibility. Largest team managed was 33 application DBA’s; supporting Retail, Equities, Fixed Income new business and legacy applications (on the mainframe along with diverse distributed applications).

Supported more than a dozen firm mergers, joint ventures and numerous highly visible firm projects (last one being application migration of Smith Barney to Morgan Stanley where I acted as the project lead for IT Database), providing strategic planning, meeting all deliverables.

Work with and attended meetings with colleagues in various time zones to collaborate and plan strategies with developers to build/upgrade applications to support the business.

Reduced mainframe DBA headcount by 46% while maintaining SLAs and expanding global support workload.

Was compliance/audit lead in database audits (including SOX) and compliance reviews.

Worked to setup standards in accordance with compliance/audit to ensure that internal controls are appropriately designed, documented, reviewed and are operating effectively.

Developed, rolled out and documented a change/problem management process utilizing ticketing systems and annotating change output and reports as per audit requirement.

Worked with internal audit and mainframe security to develop new procedures and ID’s to be used by the database staff in the production environments (relating to changes and problem fixes).

Was risk/compliance lead for the database teams, documenting best practices/procedures, doing semi-annual reviews and self-assessments (which were later reviewed by database managers along with the firm’s audit and compliance officers).

Identify security violations and inefficiencies and report risks to the management.

Review access control methodology and continuously monitor the control effectiveness of audit procedures. Collected evidence and performed risk assessment to measure the risk level, control gap, introduce preventive control and report risks to management.

Created training classes for the staff on all compliance/audit policies to mitigate risk.

Reengineered mainframe database and application batch cycles to optimize throughput. Result was a 38% reduction in nightly batch critical path run time.

Project manager for IT, assisted the Global Wealth Management organization to setup, test, execute and document the Data Obfuscation process.

Was project/technical lead to develop, document and maintain Disaster Recovery plan for all mainframe CTI database environments. Participated and supported numerous DR/COB exercises for systems or applications.

Experienced in backup/recovery, space management and running utilities to maintain application availability, minimizing downtime and preventing loss of data.

Managed the effort to relocate database legacy datasets without any disruption to the business and lowering annual DASD costs.

Provided application development groups with change task explanations, rollout coordination, problem determination and resolution support.

DB2 Systems and Application DBA knowledge, providing combined Global On-Call 24x7 for all mainframe databases.

IDMS DBA and DB Systems knowledge including software installation and all phases of Disaster Recovery.

Performed upgrades of IDMS from Release 5.7 to 10.0 and 10.2. Supported applications up to Release 14.

As project lead for database, lead effort and supported the conversion of the Smith Barney Order Matching, Trade Management and Security Master Systems from IDMS to DB2. This resulted in greater processing performance, reliability and application flexibility.

Working knowledge of 3rd party supporting IDMS and DB2 products, including CICS.

Participated in or lead group testing out new software releases and features. Created and held training classes for DBA's and application users on new releases of IDMS, DB2 and tableBase.

tableBase and Focus knowledge including software installation. Was project manager and technical lead for the last tableBase upgrade to Version 6 which involved software, JCL, procedural/automation changes and a data conversion.

Working knowledge of ISPF/TSO Panel, Skels, Clists, MVS Utilities, JCL, RACF, AF Operator, SMS/ACS rules, SRDF, WLM, TMC, Concurrent Copy and OPC Scheduler.

Conduct application database stress tests and assisted with application performance tuning efforts.

Wrote COBOL programs for upper management to simplify metrics collection.

Working knowledge of Changeman, Planview, Sharepoint and SeviceNow. Created and held training classes using Microsoft products for all mainframe groups in IT.

Programmer Analyst / IDMS Database Administrator / Database Manager

Hired to assist in billing system rewrite on Honeywell L64-20. Increased knowledge of IDMS, learning programming and database administration. Responsibilities included monitoring and maintaining all IDMS CV’s, verify data integrity, performance tuning and training users.

Rewrote, tested and migrated billing system in six months to IBM 4331 system.

Was part of a team that worked with consultants to migrate legacy systems to IDMS.

Learned IDMS programming and DBA management skills.

Developed and formatted CICS screens to be used for data entry.

Became part of the IDMS Database group, increasing IDMS skills to support database systems, applications, VSAM file allocations, CICS macros, as well as maintaining the firm’s own special technical architecture.

Manager of DB group and trained two IDMS programmers to be part of the DBA team.

Hired as a programmer trainee to work on Honeywell L64-20, running Honeywell OS/2000 and Native GCOS.

Later trained to operate L64-20 and promoted to team leader.

Major responsibilities were the conversion of old OS/2000 programs to Native GCOS as well as maintain the old and new Inventory Management systems.
