Overview

Have contributed to Lean continuous improvement and operations management, both in my private practice and as leads at Formet, Bluewater Health, the Leading Edge Group, Deloitte, CSI Global Education and others.

Brief History

Continuous Improvement Project Manager (1983-present) – Have worked on Lean and Human Capital assignments, saving client organizations millions of dollars. Remained in private practice while working with other organizations. Partnered with Toyota in Canada, China and Japan to create "Applying KAIZEN: A Measurable Approach to Continuous Improvement in the Workplace" plus workbook and self-directed learning tools. Selected by Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) to train their Cambridge and Woodstock employees in problem solving, Toyota Business Practices (TBP) and root cause analysis. Selected by TMMC to facilitate supplier relationships by participating in their Supplier Enhancement Project.

Lean Coordinator, Formet Industries (2015) Led many Lean improvement efforts, conducted Magna site audit, trained staff, led the turn-around to an employee-owned approach to continuous improvement. Worked with senior leadership to develop training, leadership and coaching abilities. Initiated new employee selection system. Eliminated many quality and production problems.

Leading Edge Group – International Expert Lean Sensei (2009-2015) – Was recruited to write concluding chapter of “Applying Lean In Healthcare” and to oversee the North American and international delivery of Lean belt training and consulting. That book went on to be nominated for a Shingo Prize. I managed to increase the business yield by over 400% in follow-up consultation and training.

Lean Improvement Specialist, Bluewater Health (2012-2014) – Helped to deploy Lean throughout the organization; Developed and delivered Lean training for belt acquisition, Lean lunch and learns, Lean board deployment, coached the senior team; Brought about sustained Lean changes and saved the organization in steps taken on the floor, medical mistakes, time and money. Also nominated for the Bluewater Health Bridging Excellence Award for Vision for my work in developing a Core Innovative Management Program plus an Advanced Program, offered in conjunction with Lambton College.

Deloitte Lean Enterprise Group – Co-Lead (2007-2009) – Recruited to co-lead this Lean consultancy, accepted the position as a contract, and maintained a full client list of my own. Led efforts across Canada, the United States and Australia. Brought the group’s billable activities up by 500%. Left when the group was folded into the US practice. Examples are:

CSI Global Education Inc. (2005-2007) -- Director of Test Design and Measurement at the Canadian Securities Institute with emphasis on Lean in the Office, Project Management and process improvement for international testing. Introduced over $2 million of savings in 3 months; brought cycle time improvements of 20-80%; eliminated part-time contract work to deliver increased efficiencies with existing staff while maintaining employee satisfaction.

Chief Operating Officer (2000-2001) -- COO Medical Informatics Firm. I oversaw production, coding, marketing and HR functions. I turned around this firm from zero sales and stagnated production to having contracts worth $1,000,000 within 6 months, increased production and oversaw the release of new products with cross-platform compliance.

Vice-President, Human Resources, Education and Training (2000) – I accepted this United Nations Civil Society volunteer position to bring a greenfield wireless telephony and computer refurbishing company to the 16 countries of ECOWAS, West Africa. Partnered with Bill Clinton, Al Gore, George Soros and others. Wrote the curriculum for grades K-12 for computer literacy.

Part-Time Professor (1988-2015) – Have taught in Canada and internationally; Taught industrial and organizational psychology, various economics courses, organizational behaviour, human resources and corporate social responsibility. Am the Invited Professor, Corporate Social Responsibility and Invited Lean Scholar, University College Cork, Cork Ireland.
