My current role is to support the team that I work with by delegating task, providing on job coaching and ensuring timely deliverables are being made.

After the Malaysian GST Implementation in April 2015, we now assist clients on their GST returns. My role is to assist and review the sales and purchases listing data from the client, identifying any errors being made in relation to the GST reporting, preparing the GST Returns and Compliance Report by highlighting any potential issues as well as identifying the GST positions of the client.

My first job in the big 4 company. Hired as an associate in the GST Team. My role was to support the GST Team during the GST Implementation in Malaysia which involved servicing clients from various industries. The industries that I involved myself are not limited to property development, construction, manufacturing, consumer goods, fashion industry, hire purchase and leasing, banking and insurance sector.

Not only I manage to further challenge myself to understand complex business processes of various different industries, I also was working with a multi – cultural team from different countries such as EY Philippines, EY Singapore and EY India. This was a booster for my career as it made me confident working in multi-cultural team.

I consistently take on the challenge by accepting more task on hand and shoulder additional responsibilities to further enhance and widen my knowledge on GST. This is proven as I had taken on a number of engagements during the peak period in year 2014 and managing these deliverables on a timely manner.

Since GST has gone live in April 2015, it is a huge accomplishment as I was able to be part of the pre implementation stage and as well as the post implementation.

What I have achieved during my milestone and projects involvement in the GST Team is as follows:

Assisting clients on the company GST Registration as well as for GST Registration for independent directors.

Preparing GST Templates to analyse client’s nature of income and providing clients with the relevant GST treatment.

Preparing GST Reports to highlight to client on high level issues faced by the company on GST related matters.

Understanding client’s business processes by engaging with clients on-site.

Managing client deliverables by having a timeline set based on the client meetings that I attend and answering client queries via email on a timely manner.

What I have achieved by working with different teams are as follow:

Have successfully built effective work relationship with other tax sub service line managers and senior associates, such as the compliance team and work together with them for GST projects or any GST queries from their client.

Delegating task to my team members and concurrently providing job coaching by assisting and reviewing their task (ie. GST Templates and Reports, Technical Queries and GST Registration).

Manage client deliverables by delegating task and explaining on how to tackle client’s queries from a GST technical point of view, whether it is via phone calls or emails or on-site meetings with client to other team members whom are involved with that engagement, so that everyone is engaged with the client.

Expanding my knowledge by understanding GST concepts cross border with my international colleagues, as similar overseas concept may be adopted and is always referenced for the Malaysian GST implementation.

Building my connections with international colleagues from the GST Team within EY by having regular meet up’s during lunch hour to discuss on how GST works in their home country.
