PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE

BLACKBERRY LIMITED, Sunrise, FL 2008–2016

SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER

Performed Finite Element Analysis (FEA) to simulate drop testing of multiple products. Identified areas of concern and recommended design changes. Fully responsibility for designing components encompassing Printed Circuit Board (PCB), Flexible Printed Circuit Board (FPC), plastic injection molding, and progressive die sheet metal,. Design internal Battery and retention scheme, Acoustic and Camera system. Mentored Junior Engineers.

Critical initiatives include Ensured designed parts met specifications and pass all verification testing by partnering with suppliers based mainly in Asia, and Quality Engineers. Collaborated on multiple PCB/FPC designs with cross functional teams as well as developed best design practice documentation.

Continuously drives and delivers engineering initiatives and results including:

Mentored Junior Engineers on all PCB, FPC design, and sheet metal design for electrical component shielding. Guided Junior Engineer in successfully designing PCB assembly for low cost BB10 product from initial concept through late prototype phase.

Mechanical lead in reviewing PCB designs with board designers to check for design errors on each PCB layer using Zuken/Mentor. Drove for prompt resolution of errors prior to prototype and production release for high volume PCB fabrication.

Lead Finite Element Analysis (FEA) Engineer for Blackberry Priv Slider Android Phone utilizing Altair Hypermesh/Hyperview and Abaqus Solver.

oSupported all FEA activities for Priv from initial prototype through to Product Launch to validate design prior to tool release/modification.

oUse simulation to drive slide housing geometry by collaborating with product architect at early ID layout stage.

oDrove issues related to Back Cover Plastic cracking and PCB strains through different simulation iteration. Created presentation of results for management to present to Senior VP.

Designed Internal Battery and Retention Scheme for Priv and resolved issue of internal short in a timely manner to not impact production ramp.

Collaborated closely with interdisciplinary team to design and experiment with various options of Processor IC Shield Cover to improve GPS performance on Priv. In addition to improving cover reliability, significant cost reduction was achieved as process went from being completely manual to being semi-automated.

Designed Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) for Blackberry Torch Slider product from initial concept to mass production launch.

oCollaborated with Mflex China ensuring slider FPC stack-up passes 200,000 lifecycle test requirement at the early prototype stage through to production launch.

oNo field return issue related to slider FPC on preliminary returns analyzed by engineering.

MOTOROLA, Plantation FL 2004-2008

SENIOR MECHANICAL ENGINEER, 3G/MOBILE DEVICES (2004–2008)

Designed components encompassing injection molding, 2-shot molded and progressive die sheet metal.

Performed Six Sigma tolerance analysis to confirm form, fit, and function of designed parts and sub-assemblies. Oversaw reliability testing to identify design issues, root-cause and drive solutions. Confirmed parts met specification and passed all reliability testing. Collaborated with suppliers in Asia, and Quality Engineers.

Drove and delivered engineering initiatives and results including:

Lead Engineer for Moto Razr II Refresh product. Drove design for Main and GPS antennas, cost reduction of paint scheme transitioning from non-conductive Vacuum Metallization (VM) to Cashew paint on all major plastic parts.

oCollaborated with supplier in China on-site to ensure all components met paint specifications and passed reliability testing.

Designed injection molded battery door, latch, and top cover for Motorola Q9, first Windows Mobile Product for the Company.

Designed 2 shot plastic and rubber molded SD door for Q9. Successfully passed reliability testing on-time to support ship acceptance.

MOTOROLA, Boynton FL 2000-2004

NEW PRODUCT ENGINEER, GLOBAL NEW PRODUCT OPERATIONS (2000–2004)

Laison between design team and manufacturing sites at initial prototype phase of product development. Conducted Design for Assembly (DFA) analysis on new products and proposed modifications to the Design Team to improve assembly process flow.

Created cross-functional team of Designers, Manufacturing and Quality Engineers to conduct FMEA (Failure Mode Effect Analysis) for multiple Motorola Products to identify high risk design components and sub-assemblies at early design phase.

oResults utilized to propose design changes and implement detection methods to minimize risk of field failures and returns.

Collaborated with Tooling Engineer to outline design requirements for assembly fixtures to minimize operator variability.

Analyzed failures from factory and performed root cause and statistical analysis to resolve issues by providing feedback to Design Engineers for required modifications.

Developed Standard operating Procedures for Operators to perform assembly and conduct functionality testing to minimize assembly time.

Transferred knowledge to Production Engineers from China and Brazil on new product assembly, and failure analysis to minimize learning curve and expedite product ramp.
