Dear Sir or Madam:

I am including this cover letter for what I consider good reasons. I realize you probably need more to go on than my résumé conveys. I have never been particularly comfortable tooting my own horn, as it were, having always believed my work would speak for itself. This becomes a Catch-22, however, when you must have your foot in the door for your work to even whisper, let alone roar. I started programming at age 11, and I do mean programming. My parents gave me a TRS-80 Model III for Christmas along with an editor/assembler so that I could write game programs in assembly language. I was learning both hardware and software concepts at a very early age.

I am primarily autodidactic, although I have taken plenty of college courses and earned two degrees, starting out as a CS major, but switching to math because I was not learning anything new. I did master in information technology, though. I was a Microsoft TechNet subscriber for many years, having access to every piece of software the company made available, and am still a Microsoft Partner. I have kept up with all of the latest technologies in both hardware and software, but I can only fall so far behind because I pick it up so readily. (Coding well in Java, for example, practically guarantees the same in C# or C I have worked with design patterns and UML: software engineering methodology is nothing foreign. I have built applications, web pages, and networks (servers, switches, routers) and administered networks, both Windows and Unix/Linux-based. I have worked with graphics, database, and network programming constructs in many languages (and I know SQL). If it can be done with a computer, I have probably done it and if not, I can learn to do it in record time. I would not blame you for thinking that to be far- reaching, which is precisely what bothers me about having to sell myself, but I am stating the truth and I do not expect you to take my word for it. With that in mind, I am attaching the letter of recommendation written by one of my undergraduate professors when I applied to graduate school at Virginia Tech. Although I waived the right to view the letter, he sent a copy to me anyway; it is self-explanatory. In preparing this letter, I found he is now consulting as Saturna Software (http://saturnasoftware.com) in British Columbia. This is definitely Dr. Cheslow: https://github.com/dcheslow1. I sincerely hope he will remember me. You may send him the letter if you would like to verify this information. I would really appreciate the opportunity to work for you. Sincerely,

Michael Dean Pugh

Re: Reference for Michael D. Pugh (***-**-****)

1) Michael Pugh was a student of mine at Virginia Western Community College in 2001. The subject of the course was Advanced JAVA Programming. Michael convinced admissions to allow him to enroll in the class despite the fact that he had never attended a class on JAVA programming or actually written any JAVA code.

For most students this would have been a serious problem but Michael not only performed well in the course, he actually “set the curve.” Michael consistently turned in assignments before they were due, with features above and beyond the requirements. He frequently tutored other students who, despite having much longer exposure to the material, did not grasp the concepts as easily as he.

As I mentioned above, Michael often worked beyond the requirements of the course. He was able to identify resources that he needed, find them with little or no guidance from me and apply them to the challenge he had set for himself. In my experience, this is a valuable skill for a research student in Computer Science. In nearly a decade of teaching at two and four year colleges, I have known only a few students who have so clearly demonstrated what I call a

“hunger for knowledge.”

Michael possesses a logical mind that has been sharpened by his studies in mathematics. He demonstrated to me that he can apply those logical thought patterns to the design and construction of software products. In the course mentioned above, the students were required to develop a non-trivial software program; Michael elevated the project to what I would describe as an application suitable for distribution.

2) Compared with students like Michael, with very little formal Computer Science education, I would place him in the top fraction of 1%. Even compared with students who have had considerable Computer Science education, I would place him in the Top 1-2%. 3) As an adjunct faculty member, I do not have access to the relative class standing of individual students.
