ACHIEVEMENTS

ARCHITECTING

Ultra High Throughput, Low Latency, Rule Engine Enabled, Transactional Container Component for Trade Order Routing for Investment Banking Group in HSBC

Challenge was to create a component (It was named ’Execution Fabric’) that can route upto 10,000 orders a second (Sub millisecond response). It was designed to be ESB compliant / pluggable so that it can be used by ESB provided data flow / business process design tools and also could be monitored using BAM utilities.

Used Berkley DB [BDB] (Key-Value Pair Persistence) for peristence and transaction management and also for faster response times, JESS rule engine for pluggable rules capability and very low number of internal threads and their scheduling management to achieve high throughput.

We could achieve upto 6000 trades per second.

Created a key value pair database called ’Blaze’ from scratch to replace BDB for even faster response times. Database could pass initial tests but its reliability was still to be established before I left the project. ’Blaze’ supported caching, transactions, replication (master – slave configuration) in both synchronous and asynchronous fashion, profiling. It also supported federation over a MOM topic (a feature useful for making it useful on grid). This was done in 2007-08 when the grid data store and processing architectures (like hadoop and cassandra) were still evolving and not widely known.

Developed a Test Harness using JMX that could wire tap the flow within Execution Fabric and thus provided us with a combined testing and monitoring solution. Test Harness was capable of pausing the thread execution flow at each wire tap point withing the fabric so that we could examine the internal state. This greatly helped the white box testing of such a mission critical container. Test cases could be programmed externally that could specify the wire taps where to stop the flow and check runtime parameters.
