My Duties:

Technical discussion with the client, understanding the scope of the project, study of the project spec.

Understanding P & ID, Customer tender/scope documents and Design basis of the project. Detailed Study/Review of P&I D to produce an Instrument Database.

Review of Instrument Index, I/O Schedule and the data sheets for the instruments and Valves.

Perform Technical bid Evaluation for Field Valves and Instruments e.g. Control Valve, Pressure safety Valve, Shutdown Valve, Transmitters and Gauges.

Understanding layout diagrams, Preparation of Instrument and Electrical Junction box location plan and Junction box grouping.

Electrical and Instrument Cable selection and sizing.

Estimation of Tray sizing and Review of tray routing with the tray support markings.( Both Electrical and Instrument Trays).

Preparation of Cable and Tray MTO (Material Take off).

Review of Hook ups and installation diagrams and preparing the Hookup BOM (Bill of material) for the Field instruments.

Guiding the control team in preparing control panel system architecture, control panel layout, control panel loop drawing.

Preparation of Functional analysis document, flowcharts and SFC (sequential functional charts) for PLC Programming development

Guiding the commissioning team in PLC programming, HMI design.

Technical support to the commissioning team and supervising their jobs to make sure successful completion of the job.

Guiding the control team and preparing Cable block diagram, Cable Schedule and Cable data sheet

Preparation of JB Termination and Marshalling Termination diagrams.

Preparing the Bill of materials for the control panel, issuing the purchase orders, assisting the procurement team in purchase and evaluating supplier quotations.

Controlsoft Engineering deputed me for handling the project with Brochot, France. BROCHOT Group is a world leader in the design and manufacturing of process, equipment and solutions for the primary aluminum, copper, zinc, magnesium, nickel and cobalt industries. The complete Anode Rodding shop for Hindalco aluminum plant is designed by Brochot. The machines which are to be commissioned at site are designed and manufactured at France.

The design phase of the project involved complete study of the project designed by Brochot. For technical discussion I visited Brochot Design office at Paris, France. During this visit I was involved in discussion and study of project with French and Russian automation engineers, electrical engineers and mechanical engineers. After returning from France my job was to lead the automation team in Controlsoft, Chennai for preparing the PLC programs, HMI and SCADA design, VFD programming and holding technical discussion with the Brochot automation Engineers in order to achieve the complete automatization.

For testing and pre-commissioning activities visited Brochot factory at Wingles, France.

After design I went for Commissioning at Hindalco aluminium Mahan, Madhya Pradesh and Aditya aluminium Lapanga, Orissa.

The Anode rodding plant contains several machines that are equipped with various proximity sensors, limit switches, photo electric sensors, transmitters, motors coupled with sophisticated encoders for high precision movement, ESD safety relays, pneumatic systems, hydraulic systems, conveyor system which are controlled by PLC and VFD . The machines are operated and monitored by HMI.

The PLC network architecture for the plant involves

PLC’s on the Brochot machines has to operate individually performing the task for which it is designed.

Each PLC has to communicate with other machine PLC. Production of each machine depends on the successor and predecessor machine.

PLC’s installed on the Brochot machines has to communicate with overhead conveyor PLC that are designed and commissioned by third party German company, Schierholz..

The communication methods used are Controlnet and Ethernet.

The operations of the whole plant can be monitored from a control room which contain the SCADA system.

My job responsibilities at site involves

All kind of activities at site starting from the erection, commissioning, modifications in both programming and hardware in order to achieve optimal performance of the machines.

Leading a team of commissioning engineers in doing PLC programming, HMI design, VFD programming of the above said machines for the precise functioning so as to achieve the desired production within the stipulated time cycle promised to client. High level complex programming are structured for the smooth operation of machines as designed and ensuring complete safety norms.

Holding technical discussion with customer, understanding their needs and adapting to user conditions as required. Training of personnel in the use of automated equipment.

Apart from the Automation side in this project, I have assisted French Electrical Engineers of Brochot and thereby I have gained good experience in Electrical field also.

My Electrical experience :

Ability to read electrical diagrams.

Confidence in Electrical troubleshooting.

Supervision of electrical erection / pre-commissionning and commissioning.

Supervision of the erection for cable trays, pulling of cables, connection in electrical panels. and connection of equipments.

Supervision of the earthing system.

Electrical tests of panels.

Managing electrical workers – Assigning daily work for team, supervising their works, preparing progress reports and non-conformity.

Working with European and other nationality people have given me courage to face the global challenges. My managerial skills was well appreciated by the European client, which influenced my company, Controlsoft, to promote me to Deputy Manager- Engineering.

3.Petro Constructors LLC.- Houston – Fuel Streamers

My Duties: My role in the project was to understand the operation philosophy of a PLF sequence operation which contains stages of filtration and mixing of several additives in a Petro-chemical industry and preparing PLC logic for the same.

Commissioning was not under Controlsoft scope.


Master Integrators is a company doing projects in PLC systems, DCS systems, Network systems, PC systems, SCADA computer applications and instrumentation for technically sophisticated Chemical, Petro-chemical industry, Textile & FMCG Industries.

My Position: Project Engineer.

Period: September 2009 to February 2011

My Duties:

Complete Handling of the project starting from technical discussion with the client about the project,

Understanding their requirement, preparing the logic for the same using the software, designing SCADA, and finally commissioning of the system so designed at the client site.

Project details

Reconditioning of six HMT VTCs, two HMCs and one SBCNC machines in HEAVY VEHICLES FACTORY (Under Ministry of defense), Avadi, chennai.

Electrical and Electronic Reconditioning of the machine involves upgrading the machine with 3Ph servo motors, induction motors and commissioning of the whole machine with Siemens interfacing system mainly Sinumerik840D, siemens drives –SIMODRIVE 611, siemens PLC’S –S7-300, installation of SINUMERIK operator panel, and supplementary operator components (machine control panels, handheld units and keyboards).

Also Maintenance of all the above machines under the warranty period of one year.

My Duties:

Programming of PLC’s (S7-300) using SIMATIC manager STEP 7 along with senior Engineers.

Troubleshoot equipment and perform corrective maintenance in breakdown situations.

Repairing and maintenance of electrical and electronic related equipments through the coordination of maintenance teams.

Troubleshooting the faults in electrical circuits, control panel and electronic faults.

Assembled complex electrical and electronic appliances such as control panels and electric motors.

My Duties:

Commissioning and Installation of AC Drives (ABB – ACS-150,ACS-350,ACS-550, ACS-800 series) in various Textile Industry, Paper Industry, Rubber Industry, Coir fibre Industry and Colour-dying industry.
