Sr. Facilities Engineer Electrical – 1986-1993

Project Facilities Engineer Electrical – 1993-1997 Automation Engineering Supervisor – 1997-2000

While working in the facilities engineering department from 1986-1997 I was in charge of designing, programming, and overseeing the installation of various facility service based projects including power distribution, and controls. These included a centralized air compressor plant utilizing variable speed frequency drives on compressors controlled via a Slc500 for sequencing and loading. A 6400 ton central chiller facility utilizing (4) 1600 ton chillers and auxiliary equipment all controlled and coordinated with multiple Slc500s and an RsView MMI monitoring/control system. I was also the system administrator for the engineering department’s CAD system, which evolved from VMS, to Unix, and finally to Windows NT. During this time I had received three Innovation Awards for the work I had done on the CAD System, Chiller Plant, and application of the Proset Injection molding system in our plastic molding department. In 1997 I transferred into the Manufacturing Automation department which designed and built automated equipment for new and old product lines. While in this department I designed and programmed automated assembly and test equipment for the Micrologix 1500 and Micrologix 1200 production lines. These lines utilized robotic part handling, vision verification, barcode tracking, and laser marking cells. In 1998 I received the “Chairman’s Team Award” along with the others working on the MicroLogix 1500 product line for developing the product and manufacturing process in record time. Worked with marketing and sales personnel to tutor sales trainees in sales call techniques, and customer tours for product demonstrations.

While working at Charter Wire, I designed and installed a four draw, three mill rolling line. Utilizing Reliance DC follower drives and a GE plc to coordinate system control and interlocking. Enabled the product to be run at 2-3 times the rate of the existing lines.

Rockwell Automation/Allen-Bradley

While in the Facilities Engineering department:

1. I implemented and managed the engineering CAD system, which took the department of 25 engineers from drafting boards to the computer environment. This included selecting, justifying, procuring, and installing both the hardware and software platforms. Networking the workstations with a fileserver system. Training the users on both the hardware and software platforms. Customizing the CAD software for our application. I received an Innovation Award for this effort.

2. I worked with the development people on the Proset Injection Molding system to retrofit eight molding machines with this new control system being developed by A-B. We used these presses for prototyping the hardware and software that would later become a product offering. I received a second Innovation Award for this project.

3. I designed and implemented a 6400ton central chiller plant for the Milwaukee manufacturing facility. This included sizing and configuration of the motor control centers utilizing soft start controllers and frequency drives. Medium voltage 1200hp reduced voltage starters for the chiller equipment. Installing Plc control systems to monitor and control the chillers and support equipment thru remote I/O interfaces, with operator interface panels for control. Determine and implement P&ID control functions between chillers and support equipment. Develop a HMI data collection system, which monitored and controlled the system from multiple locations over the plant Ethernet network. I received my third Innovation Award for this project. While in the Automation Engineering department:

1. Developed a central Air Compressor plant using three 200hp centrifugal compressors with Variable frequency drives controlled by a Plc to coordinate sequencing and loading of the system to provide plant production air at a 1- 2psi deviation, with energy conservation in mind. This system became a marketing tool for the compressor manufacturer to offer this option on their equipment.

2. Developed the automated in-line test system for the MicroLogix 1500 product family. Implemented the in-line product test, download, heat up, and final functional test systems using Ethernet based Plcs that would track each unit though the manufacturing, vision inspection, and packaging processes. We received the Chairman’s Team Award for this project. 3. Developed the automated in-line test system for the MicroLogix 1200 product family. Implemented the robotic part handling, in-line product test, download, heat up, final functional test, and Laser marking systems using a Soft Plc based system that would track each unit though the manufacturing, marking, vision inspection, and packaging processes.
