- Arabic for Non-Natives Programs and Goals I.

The general program for teaching Arabic to

Non-Natives • This program is specially

designed to teach Arabic and provide insights

into the literature, culture, history, and

politics of this part of the world. To this end,

there exists a set of didactic goals the

program is seeking to materialize: 1.

Teaching students how to articulate, read,

and write Arabic sounds (phonemes) as well

as providing them with the lexicon, grammar,

and structure necessary to develop the four

language skills: reading, writing, listening,

and speaking. 2. Introducing students to the

Arab community in general, and the

Palestinian community in particular, in terms

of its customs, traditions, geography, cultural

and intellectual formation. 3. Furnishing

students with useful information on Arab

heritage and its literary, historical, and

ethical elements. 4. Providing students with

contemporary political, economical, and

ecological terminology. 5. Providing students

with the terminology necessary to

understand Arabic language sciences: ilm al-

nahw (‘the science of syntax’), ilm al-sarf

(‘the science of morphology’), literature,

rhetoric, and criticism. 6. Arousing students'

interest in learning Arabic as well as building

up their perception of its aesthetics. • The

program's points of departure: Students

willing to study Arabic language & literature

need to undergo four levels: • Level one. •

Level two. • Level three. • Level four. This

two-year program is divided into four back-

to-back academic semesters and students

must complete each semester on its entirety.

A semester is comprised virtually of 15

credits per week, to the amount of 3 credits

per day. Alternatively, the four levels can be

completed in a year and a half if a student

opts to study the two long months summer

session which falls into 4 credits a day. •

Essentials the program takes into account in

each level: 1. A well-thought-out plan. 2. The

curriculum. 3. A variety of activities prepared

by the instructor. 4. Taking into consideration

the Cumulative Approach in the teaching

process as well as the integration of all four

levels. 5. Putting aside the original language

as much as possible and making students

experience Arabic first-hand through

interacting with native speakers of Arabic. 6.

Making use of both Applied Linguistics and

Contrastive Linguistics to identify certain

problems that students of Arabic might come

a cross. In so doing, students will be able to

recognize common features all languages

share and use them in mastering Arabic.
