Work Experience

Axeon Specialty Chemicals

PSM & Training Manager August 2015 to present

I am responsible for all management and record keeping of the 14 elements of Process Safety Management (PSM) from OSHA regulation 1910.119 at a 250+ employee petrochemical refinery.

I have been responsible for the writing and rewriting of over 5 process safety and general safety standards which are currently being implemented.

I have been responsible for the management of incidents and action item completions (site typically had 400+ tracked items per year).

I have been responsible for managing a paper based management of change process, while building a digital library of all past MOC’s and soliciting electronic management of change systems for future use.

Part of a team which designed and built a new curriculum for personnel on-site to satisfy both Axeon and OSHA safety training regulations, as well as laid new groundwork for future operations trainings.

Kaneka North America

Process Safety / PSM Superintendent April 2013 to July 2015

I am responsible for the management and implementation of all 14 elements of Process Safety Management (PSM) from OSHA regulation 1910.119 at a 450+ employee chemical manufacturing site.

I have conducted Process Hazard Analyses (PHA) and Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA) for large (1-5MM dollar) projects as well as managed the closeout of 25+ action items arising from PHAs, LOPAs and PSM Audits conducted by 3rd parties, in time for the mandatory 3 year Audit review.

I developed Process Safety Information packets with up to date information to be used for new employee training and various insurance and PSM audits conducted.

I have managed all aspects of various studies conducted at the site (Facility Siting Studies, PHA's and PSM Audits), from proposal gathering through comparison of deliverables to confidentiality agreements and contract signing to review of final documentation and acceptance.

I implemented a new electronic Management of Change software site-wide, which will be used to replace two different systems utilized at the site (a paper based system at one unit, and an ineffective electronic system in several others).

I have written new safety standards for the site, which are being used by Kaneka Corporate as a global standard way of approaching process safety across the various countries in which Kaneka operates.

Siemens Corporation – Pressure Relief Analysis

Lead Engineer October 2012 to March 2013

Managed a 4 person team in Bucharest Romania through on-boarding and beyond, ensuring training and work quality output to ensure proper application of US codes and standards for US based clients. I conducted weekly one on ones to ensure high quality work and address any concerns that they are having, as well as setting quality and development goals for each.

Responsible for training of new engineers involving Siemens proprietary pressure protection software (PPM and PSPPM) and modeling software (Hysys) as well as good engineering practices and codes from ASME, API, and ANSI with regards to Pressure Relief Analysis.

Responsible for performing quality checks for engineers analysis and ensuring similarly high quality work from different level engineers (new hires to 3 year employees)

Updated project guidelines according to differing client requests while ensuring good engineering practices.

Reviewed Master PHA / What-If analysis documents provided by the client to ensure that all appropriate measures of protection were incorporated into Siemens’ analysis.

Process Safety Consultant (Level 1 and Level 2) July 2007 to October 2012

Normal daily responsibilities were to take client provided documentation (P&ID’s, PFD’s, Heat and Material Balances, and vessel U-1A Forms) and address potential Pressure Relief concerns on an equipment or relief device basis. I used the provided documentation to determine all OSHA 1910 applicable scenarios, the relief rate for each scenario resulting in overpressure, the available relief device capacity in the event of each scenario, and any inadequacies identified. After safety inadequacies were identified, I developed multiple mitigation options, such as vessel rerating, installation of new relief protection, and new operating procedures, to alleviate the identified pressure and temperature safety inadequacies based on client specific guidelines, current operational procedures, and ASME, API, ANSI codes to ensure adequate and proper pressure relief protection in the event of the identified overpressure scenarios.

Additional Responsibilities included:

Developed a new career progression chart illustrating potential career paths in various sections within my small division of Siemens.

Thought up and spearheaded the idea for an Internal Career Informational Session to highlight the various groups and areas within the Conceptual Engineering Services division of Siemens Energy which employees could pursue. I was also responsible for managing the implementation and logistics of the Informational Session for a group of 150+ employees. This career session was recommended for a Siemens Energy Best Practice and will be implemented in other divisions of Siemens.

Managed a five-person project team on-site to conduct data collection and guideline finalization for the kick off of the project through collaboration with client contacts, unit engineers, and operations personnel. Managed a second project team at the client site to collect additional data needed to get the project back on schedule.

Member of the data assessment, expectation setting, and project capture team for the largest project in company history, an initial project of $16.5MM, plus an additional $13MM in projects and follow-up.

Managed an off-site subcontracting team of engineers in India, conducting progress meetings, liaising between the subcontracting team, Siemens Project Team, and client engineers. I was responsible for ensuring that all necessary information was available to maintain the project schedule.

Based on work conducted for Valero, I was requested to conduct training sessions on two occasions to answer questions and to help develop familiarity with Siemens proprietary software as well as methods of analysis to facilitate the hand over of ever-greening of the Valero unit and flare databases to Valero personnel.

Promoted to Level II consultant within 18 months of joining Siemens.

Villanova University School of Engineering

Graduate Design Project in Computational Fluid Dynamics: May 2006 – September 2007

Constructed and meshed a three dimensional bioreactor in a computer modeling program (Gambit), based upon measurements taken from a specific geometry.

Wrote and compiled specific C++ programs to calculate the oxygen transfer coefficient (kLa) and concentration as a function of height, and carbon dioxide transfer coefficient (kLa) and concentration as a function of height.

Conducted Computer Modeling experiments for dissolved species concentrations in Fluent software package on the constructed bioreactor geometry

Senior Design Project in Computational Fluid Dynamics: September 2005 – May 2006

Set up and ran a two dimensional simulation involving the purging of air from a reactor using steam; simulations set up and conducted for GlaxoSmithKline. Worked with simulations which had been set up by a previous masters candidate, for a three dimensional bioreactor, involving mixing and maintaining an appropriate oxygen transfer coefficient (kLa) for cell life; simulations conducted for Centocor. These simulations laid the groundwork for the Graduate Design Project beginning May 2006.

Centocor 6/27/05 – 8/19/05

Intern

Involved in the setting up a bioreactor lab, built bioreactors, and conducted experiments for the validation of a PolyChem© testing machine; also fully updated bioreactor databases from 2003 and 2005.

Villanova University 2002 – 2004

Student Storage Company
