2002-2005 – President & CEO, SonoMedica, Inc. Responsible for leading company (an R&D stage medical device company) through period of capital raising, obtaining FDA approval, and marketing of innovative medical devices.

2000 – 2002 – President & CEO, 5Star Bank. Full P&L responsibility for $240 million national credit card bank. Responsible for development and execution of strategic plan and for asset/liability management. Initiatives implemented during my tenure resulted in a 150% increase in earnings over only an 18 month period.
1999 – 2000 – Executive Vice President COO, InterBank Funding Corporation. Oversaw origination and management of $140 million portfolio of mezzanine and equity investments in commercial real estate, service companies and food distribution companies.
1998 – 1999 – Director, Eagan McAllister Associates, Inc. Served as senior financial officer and as a line manager for this information technology company. Led financial restructuring which moved company from position of low profitability to one of being among top 20% of peer companies with respect to profitability. Increased available credit facilities for company by 100%, while lowering the cost of capital by 25%. Returned troubled division to profitability, after three consecutive years of losses.
1994 – 1996 – President & CEO, The Heritage Bank. Led the rehabilitation of failing $80 million bank. Resolved $15 million in problem loans, initiated mortgage lending business, and achieved 10% growth in core deposits during first 12 months. In second 12 months achieved highest earnings in the bank’s history. Improved regulatory compliance record significantly.
1992 – 1994 – President & CEO, NVR Savings Bank. Full P& L responsibility for $750 Million federal savings bank. Profits increased by 75% over two years. Led bank to a leading position among community banks in Fairfax County Virginia. Bank was sold to Crestar for approximately $50 million, resulting in a gain of approximately $36 million for the bank’s sole shareholder.
1991 – Chairman & CEO, Investors Savings Bank. Retained by Board of Directors and Office of Thrift Supervision to lead attempted rehabilitation of $2.4 billion savings bank, based in Richmond, Virginia. Over $150 million in troubled assets were successfully resolved and core earnings improved by 25%. However, the negative impact of non-performing assets and changes in capital regulations due to changes in banking laws proved too great to overcome.
1988 – 1998 – Managing Partner, Bostian & Company. Provided crisis management and financial consulting to approximately 9 banks during the period. Consultant to Dominion Resources (parent of Virginia Power) regarding under-performing real estate investments. Served as an expert witness in litigation regarding mortgage industry and securities industry issues. Provided financial and strategic advisory services to mature information technology companies and to early stage technology companies.
1986 – 1988 – Managing Director, Security Pacific Merchant Bank. Created and led Mortgage Securities, Asset Backed Securities and Commercial Real Estate Securitization departments at Security Pacific. Within 75 days, the division was at break-even. Within 18 months the division’s pretax net income was $20 million per annum. After six months, assumed management of all Security Pacific’s residential mortgage lending activities. Within six months of assuming management, operating losses were reversed, bringing profitability in the function to in excess of 1.4% of average assets (after tax). Led private label securitization of over $2.5 billion in mortgages from the Bank’s portfolio, substantially reducing interest rate risk for the Bank. Oversaw the simultaneous acquisition and disposition of Rainier Mortgage Company (associated with Security Pacific’s acquisition of Rainier Bank) avoiding serious contingent liabilities in Rainier Mortgage and recording a $90 million gain to Security Pacific. Additional milestones at Security Pacific included the following:
1. Led first public underwriting of securities by a commercial bank, since the Great Depression.
2. Securitized over $2 Billion in Commercial Real Estate Mortgages.
3. Largest single credit commercial real estate securitization in the 1980’s (Union Carbide Headquarters).
4. Dramatic improvement of Mortgage Lending processes and profitability at Security Pacific.
5. Oversaw more than $3 billion in credit lines to financial services companies.
1985 – 1986 – Vice President, Director of Fixed Income Research, Paine Webber, Inc. Managed staff of 25 Ph.D. level analysts and 15 information technology professionals. Recruited staff to upgrade research capabilities, re-organized functional research specialties. Paine Webber was able to improve its Institutional Investor rankings significantly in only one year. Served on Investment Policy Committees of Paine Webber and Mitchell Hutchins.
1983 – 1985 – Senior Vice President, E.F. Hutton Mortgage. Managed trading of residential mortgages and commercial mortgage brokerage for E.F. Hutton. Responsible also for IT and research support for these activities.
1982 – 1983 – Senior Analyst, The Columbia Group. Provided asset/liability consulting and mortgage market analysis for financial institutions.
1979 – 1982 – American Mortgage Insurance and Republic Mortgage Insurance Companies. Started and managed actuarial departments for each company. Became recognized as industry expert in forecasting mortgage defaults and prepayments.
