Name of Hospital & Description: I am now working as a Research/Field Nurse in a Research Collaboration Project on Etiology of Childhood Pneumonia of Ospital ng Palawan, in collaboration with Research Institute for Tropical Medicine and Tohoku University of Sendai Japan funded by JICA(Japan International Cooperation Agency). We are conducting this research at Ospital ng Palawan which is a Secondary Hospital under the Department of Health.
HOSPITAL CAPACITY:
The Ospital ng Palawan is a secondary level hospital with an authorized bed capacity of 100 and implementing capacity of 150, but most of the time it exceeds to 200-250 due to the number of patients coming from different municipalities of Palawan.
TYPES OF WARD:
The hospital has Emergency room, Medical ward, Pediatric ward, Ob-gyne ward, Surgical ward, Delivery room, Neonatal intensive care unit, Pediatric intensive care unit, Post anesthetic unit, Male and Female Intensive care unit and Operating room. Most commonly we get our patients from Emergency room and pediatric ward.
NUMBER OF BEDS:
The Pediatric ward has a bed capacity of more than 70-beds that can accommodate different cases. The staff ration is 1 Project doctor, 2 Project nurse and 1 Medical Technologist.

Clinical Work:
1. Collects specimen such as Nasopharyngeal specimen i.e mucus from enrolled patients using nasopharyngeal swabs.
2. Assists in collection blood specimen and cerebro-spinal fluid.
*Hold patient during blood extraction
*Prepares the instrument/materials needed for cerebro-spinal fluid extraction using sterile technique.
3. Prepares materials such as surgical mask, lumbar puncture needle, sterile gloves, sterile screw cup tubes, adhesive bandage, sterile gauze, 70% alcohol swab, needles and syringes needed for the collection of different specimens.
4. Guides the enrolled patients in the different medical procedures(X-ray, oxygen therapy, empiric antibiotic treatment, etc.)
5. Checks and records the vital signs like temperature. cardiac and respiratory rates, oxygen saturation, height, weight, other respiratory signs and symptoms., etc. using thermometer, stethoscope, pulse oximeter,and weighing scale.
Administrative Work:
1. Helps in the evaluation of patient for enrollment:
* Determines if patients is qualified using the entry criteria from provided.
2. Facilitate the enrollment of patients into the program.
3. Encodes the various data for the study.
4. In charge of the day to day logistics of the office/study.
* Buys office supplies, maintain the inventory of materials and equipment.
5. Forwards, through courier, the collected specimens to the Research Institute for Tropical Medicine Laboratory.

The hospital provides services in the specialties of medicine, surgery, delivery, pediatrics, obstretrics-gynecology, Neonatal Intensive care unit, Pediatric Intensive care unit, Male and Female Intensive care unit, Post Anesthetic care unit and outpatient department. The hospital has a 100-bed authorized capacity with 171.81% occupancy rate.
