EXPERIENCE

Post-doctorate Research Fellow Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI), Harvard University, Boston, MA.

JUNE 2014 – JUNE 2015

I have worked at Massachusetts eye and ear infirmary (MEEI) / ophthalmology department, Boston, in the area of optical coherence tomography (OCT) images. The goal of the project was to measure the volume and thickness of retinal tissues in Glaucoma patients during multiple visits in order to early prediction of Glaucoma disease development. My main duties were image segmentation, noise reduction and tissues volume & thickness calculations, by developing a novel software using MatLab programming environment. In this software, I have developed tools for automatic feature extraction from the set of 193 OCT images and automatic segmentation of both the optic nerve and macula layers. This software reconstructs the retinal surface from a series of OCT images, calculates the volume and thickness parameters and produces a report and figures of the findings. Moreover, I have designed the graphical user interface (GUI) for this software. The GUI was used by medical staff and medical students and it was user friendly interface.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work in a collegial and cooperative manner with the faculty supervisor and other co-workers.

Meet regularly (once a week) to establish and foster a research development plan.

Within the predetermined research scope and methodology, conduct research experiments in the field of image processing.

Calculates, analyzes and reports research data in a professional manner to the supervisor.

Design and develop a new algorithm using MatLab to find the edges and layers of the OCT images for the optic nerve head and macula.

Develop a new algorithm to construct a 3D model from a set of 193 2D OCT images captured by the Spectralis machine and reconstruct the retina in a 3D model.

Generate spread sheet and text files for the results.

Measure volume and thickness in the optic nerve head and macula.

Build a (GUI) using MatLab for the medical staff.

Optimize the algorithm in order to reduce the time consumed to process a set of 193 OCT image.

Participate/assist in manuscript writing for publication in scientific journals and/or presentations. May also assist in grant writing.
