Lead Design Engineer

Lead Design Engineer JT 100 a new 100,000lb Class Directional Drill: Defined product specifications and requirements, designed major mechanical systems. Directed drafters and designers. Coordinated with test engineers, manufacturing engineers, and production buyers to bring the product to production as well as overseeing initial production phases. Work involved major mechanical system design, coordination of prototype builds, manufacturability improvements, testing, and transfer to successful production.

Designed portions of JT3020 and AT3020 30,000lb class drills and pipe loaders including: drill pipe, pipe loaders, pipe magazines, drill tool adaptors, and pipe make/break system; Work involved design of welded components, hydraulic cylinders, and mechanical linkages.

Designed portions of RT70, RT90, & RT115 (70-115 hp wheeled tractors) including: axle mounts, drive line, frame tilt system, rear steering system. Redesigned, tested, and fielded a new roll-over protective structure which did not compromise the cab kit for the RT90 tractor. Subsequently designed the roll-over protective structure for the HT115, a heavier, tracked version of the RT115. Work involved structural analysis, fatigue testing, coordination with suppliers, and compliance with SAE roll-over safety standards.

Developed H532 and H552 plows for 50 horsepower trenchers. Designed the vibratory plow attachment and the plow/trencher combination attachment for the RT55 tractor. Work involved mechanical redesign of an existing system for extreme manufacturing cost reduction while maintaining product reliability.

Designed and Improved H732, H932, H752, H952, H830, H850, M730, M750 vibratory plows and trenching attachments used on 70-115 horsepower trenchers: Work involved designing linkages and bearing systems for heavy fatigue environments and increasing commonality of components across attachment families.

Created DRC150 double reel carrier for RT and HT150 series tractors. Work involved designing lifting linkages and large weldments.

Diagnosed underlying problems (raw material defects, manufacturing defects, abuse, etc) associated with warranty claims and customer complaints. Work involved assisting customer service to support warranty claim decisions. Teamed with dealers to educate customers on effective use of DitchWitch® equipment.

Updated technical manuals and marketing literature: Work involved reviewing existing document for errors, assisting on photo shoots, and teaming with technical writing staff to produce accurate, professional, readable technical manuals, repair guides, sales literature, parts books, and owner’s manuals.

2003 – 2012: Lead Design Engineer Drill Pipe: The Charles Machine Works, Inc. (DitchWitch®)

Lead teams to evaluate new manufacturing processes and production practices.

Oversaw all design and product changes for nine product lines and $30,000,000 annual pipe production

Provided technical support and traveled with to raw material buyers when evaluating domestic and foreign steel mills.

Developed improved testing fixtures.

Authored a comprehensive internal report documenting CMW’s past fifteen years of drill pipe research and design theory.

Trained Ditch Witch dealers, customers and internal staff on drill pipe use, care and failure diagnosis.
