Process Improvement:
Assisted with refining optimization projects delivering in excess of R50M in energy and fibre savings Managed R&D projects that assisted with succesful conversion of two pulp mills from paper grade Kraft pulping to Pre-Hydrolysis Kraft mills producing chemical cellulose Head of Department – Fibre Processing May 2010 to Current Sappi Technology Centre Pretoria, Gauteng
Lead R&D initiatives for Sappi's global pulping, bleaching and refining operations using in-house pilot digesters, bleach reactors and refiners. Manage a R10M budget and ensure optimum uptime of pilot equipment. Assist with the design and commissioning of new pilot equipment as required. Simulate, optimize and develop new pulp processing operations to increase pulp yield and productivity with improved quality at a competitive cost.
Manage an R&D team of 20 specialists, scientists and technicians and liaise with management and production personnel to run key projects which may include:
- Simulating Sulphite or Pre-Hydrolysis Kraft process to make dissolving pulp.
- Simulating Soda, Kraft and Sulphite process for paper grade pulps.
- Analysis / evaluation of spent liquor with accreditation on selected methods.
- Handsheet strength evaluations on brown and bleached pulps
- Fractionation trials using pilot equipment
- Bench-top & pilot bleaching with Oxygen, Ozone, Chlorine Dioxide and Peroxide
- Fibre audits to evaluate and optimize fibre quality through the process
- Refiner diagnostics with pilot scale analyses of integrated / market pulps
- Evaluation of alternative wood species for integration into mill operations
- Bio-refinery studies to extract value from spent liquor and other side streams Programme Leader - Fibre and Refining Jul 2009 to Apr 2010 Sappi Technology Centre Pretoria, Gauteng
Provide an efficient fibre testing service.
Develop expertise in the fibre research and refining section. Run fibre audits to evaluate and optimize the effects of processing operations on the fibre characteristics. Manage and report on projects and provide support on all refining and fibre related issues local and abroad. Make use of innovative methods, chemical additives and specialized equipment to improve fibre development and add value to the delivered timber and waste streams. Senior Research Scientist Sep 2005 to Jun 2009
