This is a research project. The goal of this project is to search unknown potential drug side effects by analyzing online community(Medhelp.org).This system takes social media posts as the input and identifies the location of the drug, disease and medical sign terms. It is to be noted that the medical sign terms could be a “drug's side effect” or “disease symptom”. Only the “drug's side effect” is our goal. The system then automatically use NLP(Natural Language Processing) rules to decide if the medical sign is potential side-effects of the drug. In the end output all potential drug's side effects for further research use.

Job Responsibilities:

Understand the goal of the project.

Design NLF(Natural Language Processing) rules to find potential drug's side effect.

Design System structure and database ERD.

Integrate the system with MetaMap(a highly configurable program at the National Library of Medicine (NLM) to map biomedical text to the UMLS Metathesaurus or, equivalently, to discover Metathesaurus concepts referred to in text.)

Created overall high level process diagram and broke it down to individual process diagrams and flowcharts for use along with BRD’s and FRD’s using MS Visio, MS Project and MS Word etc.

Implement system with Java and Mysql, build Java API with MetaMap server.

Analyze result from the systems, document it, redesign NLF rules to optimize the results.

Final report of the system.

Environment: MetaMap, Eclipse, Mysql, MS Project, Microsoft Visio
