AREAS OF EXPERTISE AND CAREER INTERESTS

I spent nearly 20 years working in the California educational system initially as a teacher, counselor, and ultimately as a school psychologist. I became licensed as a psychologist in California in 1993 and continued to work in the field of school psychology while building a part-time private practice. I have taught various psychology courses for several universities at both the undergraduate and graduate level. I have also had the opportunity to work in educational administration as a program director and training director. I spent 10 years working as a clinical psychologist in the field of chemical dependency/dual diagnosis and also spent a year working in the field of health psychology.

In 2013, I embraced the opportunity to live and work in New Zealand. I became a registered psychologist in New Zealand and have been working on an acute inpatient mental health unit, in forensic mental health at a correctional facility, and with the New Zealand Police Wellness and Trauma Programs.

I enjoy working with a multidisciplinary team of professionals and having the opportunity to interface with other psychologists. I have extensive experience with psychological assessment from my school psychology and clinical backgrounds and have expanded these skills to include forensic assessments for the Courts in New Zealand. I have pursued additional training over the past three years in the assessment and treatment of trauma and also have interests in health psychology, forensic mental health, grief/loss, and dual diagnosis. I enjoy working in multicultural and economically diverse settings which has been fostered through my professional experience in California, Hawaii, and New Zealand. I have worked with individuals of all ages from preschoolers to the elderly with my preference being adolescents, adults, and geriatrics.

MANAGEMENT AND LEADERSHIP SKILLS

General management skills would include being organized, responsible, practicing self-care, and utilizing time management strategies. I believe my peers and co-workers view me as approachable, reliable, and as a team player.

I would describe my leadership style as democratic as I often utilize my counseling and listening skills to empower others. I prefer to lead by example and collaborate with others to solve problems and resolve issues.

CHARACTER

I take pride in my work and make every effort to represent the field of psychology in a professional and ethical manner. I value open and honest communication in my personal and professional life and believe we can resolve most issues working together as a team. I have come to realize that life is precious, sometimes too short, and it is up to us to live it to the fullest. I am learning that living is about taking risks, discovering new things, being in the present, and not allowing oneself to become complacent or bored. I am grateful for the many opportunities I have been afforded and enjoy sharing what I have with others. I am a reliable, dependable, and loyal friend and strive to extend these traits to my professional life. I believe in the value of therapy and enjoy helping others to achieve improved mental health. I think laughter is one of the best forms of therapy and that one should be cautious not to take things too seriously or too personally.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

While residing in New Zealand, I have had the opportunity to make presentations on various psychology topics to community members who interface with mental health clients. I have taken the opportunity to become more familiar with the support resources available in the community by visiting these sites and building relationships with their staff. I serve on the Children of Parents with Mental Illness and Addiction (COPMIA) committee at the local level which is devoted to providing support to the children of clients suffering from mental illness. http://www.tepou.co.nz/news/a-look-at-the-ministry-of-healths-new-national-copmia-guideline/573

I participated in the Student Advisory Program which is an organization made up of various professionals working with youth in the community. Monthly meetings were held to share resources and information on events and activities. I was involved in a substance abuse prevention committee devoted to preventing substance use among children and adolescents. I was also involved in a suicide prevention task force aimed at providing resources to the community and preventing suicide.

PERSONAL INTERESTS

I enjoy most outdoor activities and sports, i.e. hiking, swimming, boating, fishing, and snorkeling. I have found that cooking and baking are my creative outlets and I enjoy experimenting with new recipes, flavors, and spices. I work out in a gym as it is a great way to manage stress, prevent compassion fatigue and maintain fitness. In my free time, I love to travel, attend concerts, sporting events, and cultural activities. One of my hobbies is thrift store shopping as I find it to be therapeutic and a variation of mindfulness. I enjoy turning someone else’s “junk” into a personal treasure.

PERSONAL STRENGTHS

I believe my friends and family would say that I am independent, honest, unselfish, loyal, dependable, have a good sense of humor and focus more on giving than taking. I view myself as generous believing that you receive only after you have given. I am a good listener, avoid offering advice, and strive to be non-judgmental of others. I believe we all have strengths and weakness and practice compassion over pity. I view others in a strengths based model and believe most people to be capable of most things. I make every effort to be available to my friends and family and have the reputation of being confidential and trustworthy.

PROFESSIONAL STRENGTHS

I function well as part of a team while also being able to work independently when necessary. I am a good communicator and respect the expertise of fellow professionals. I am very time conscious, work to meet deadlines, and respect time constraints. I am able to easily establish rapport with clients and colleagues and believe that professional therapy begins with a solid therapeutic relationship.
