CAREER OBJECTIVES
To build a long term career in healthcare, teaching and research in the area of Cardiovascular and Metabolic Science in order to gain in-depth knowledge, skills and experience to tackle major issues in publ ic health and to suggest solutions to public health policy makers.
To publish my findings in open access peer -reviewed scientific journals.
To build a network of researchers for future research collaborations EDUCATION BACKGROUND
2013 – 2014 MSc Sport and Exercise Science and Medicine (Merit) University of Glasgow: Project supervisor, Dr Jason M.R. Gill Dissertation Title: Does Cardio-Respiratory Fitness, Physical Activity and Body Composition Influence Fat Oxidation in West African Women Living in the UK? [Distinction] My project examined the influence of cardio-respiratory fitness, physical activity and body composition
(CPB) on fat oxidation in West African women living in the UK. Existing evidence shows that obesity is a severe problem exhibited in the population of West African women in the United Kingdom. Low rates of fat oxidation have been reported in various studies to increase weight gain and weight regain following weight lost in these group of women. It is not known whether cardio-respiratory fitness, physical activity and body composition (CPB) influence fat oxidation in West African women in the UK. 2008 – 2012 BSc Sport and Exercise Science
Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology Ghana: Second class upper (2.1) Dissertation Title: Prevalence and Perceived Effects of Performance Enhancing Drugs among Athletes in Ashanti Region. [Distinction]
Drug control has become an important component of modern day sport. It is no doubt that athletes who engage in the use of performance enhancing substances suffer tremendous harmful side effects. Therefore, my project investigated the extent of the use of performance enhancing drugs among athletes in the Ashanti region; to find out the various drugs and substances that are abused by these athletes to enhance performance and to determine the dangers and health risk associated with the use of performance enhancers in sport. April 2014 – November 2014 Graduate Research Assistant, Institute of Cardiovascular and Medical Sciences, University of Glasgow, United Kingdom. I led a research team under the supervision of Dr Jason M.R. Gill. We investigated the difference in fat metabolism in response to feeding and exercise between West Africans and White European women. Evidence shows that West African origins seem to be more susceptible to obesity or weight gain than other ethnic group such as white Europeans, particularly when they adopt a westernized lifestyle. Low rates of fat oxidation have been reported in various studies to increase weight gain and weight regain following weight loss. This study seeks to investigate if any differences in fat oxidation exist between West African and White European women. This knowledge could help us to develop new ways of preventing and treating obesity in West African people in the future. I was also involved in a research examining the effects of four weeks shuttle run training on insulin sensitivity in sedentary men.
