American Electric Power Buchanan, MI 2013-2015
Design Engineering Director
One of the largest electric utilities in the U.S. serving 5 million customers across eleven states. Responsible for compliance of the D.C. Cook Nuclear Generating Station with the NRC, federal and state regulations. Led the design engineering team of 96 people responsible for lifecycle management projects budgeted for $1.2 billion over six years. Implemented modifications and completed successful government and industry oversight inspections.
• Completed engineering change packages for 28 at-risk capital projects, eliminating a one-year backlog.
• Reclaimed regulatory compliance for 19 equipment abandonment projects, returning projects to the normal work control process.
Exelon Nuclear Morris, IL 2010-2013
Design Engineering Manager
Leading power generator with assets generating more than 32,000 megawatts across the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Texas. Managed the 17-person site engineering team charged with online and outage electrical modifications, I&C modifications and cyber security evaluations. Monitored the quality of work and completed design and corrective decisions. Approved electrical and I&C design changes, calculations and drawings. Managed projects, modifications and inspections.
• Concluded numerous key capital improvement projects on time during the refueling outages from 2010 to 2012.
• Led station through a successful Nuclear Regulatory Commission inspection and received no significant findings. Westinghouse Electric Company, LLC Pittsburgh, PA 2003-2010 Program Manager Fellow Engineer
A supplier of safe and innovative nuclear technology to utility clients globally. Planned and scheduled the advanced International Reactor, Innovative, Secure (IRIS) commercial development and deployment project. Led a multinational team to design the IRIS loss of coolant accident test facility.
• Created the project plan and schedule for converting the IRIS advanced nuclear power plant from an R&D project to commercial development and deployment. The design consortium, comprised of 24 members from nine countries included industrial companies and a strong component of individual members including government organizations, laboratories, universities and utility customers.
• Originated a requirements management process to define I&C requirements and RFP responses for four AP1000 power generating stations in China, a contract valued in excess of $250 million for the division.
• IRIS utilized a once-through superheat steam generator not controllable by traditional approaches. Numerous engineers failed to identify acceptable designs. Defined an effective control strategy that evolved into one of the company’s three top trade secrets for the IRIS design.
• Coordinated domestic and international affiliates in developing the IRIS loss of coolant accident test facility in Italy. Continued…

Union Switch & Signal, Inc. City, State 2001-2004 Systems Engineering manager
International leader with global presence in signaling and implementing integrated transport systems. Guided system engineering on all dispatching systems for North American railroad clients. Conceived and developed a standardized requirements management method for contractors. Created project-level plans and schedules to coordinated activities of eight customer-contractors. Managed three to six direct reports.
• Fulfilled a positive train control project 14% under budget and seven months ahead of schedule.
-PREVIOUS CAREER EXPERIENCE-
Westinghouse Electric Company, LLC Pittsburgh, PA Senior Engineer
Led the control system teams to modernize I&C systems for the Temelín nuclear power plant in the Czech Republic. Coordinated system modeling, functional design, architecture, and software and hardware development.
• Completed the design verification analyses for the reactor control and limitations systems.
• Developed the Advanced Continuous Simulation Language (ACSL) model for conducting transient analyses of the Temelín nuclear power plant, reactor control and limitation systems and balance of plant control systems.
• Designed specifications and algorithms to improve key module performance in tracking and transfer during complex mode changes.
• Devised a new format for functional design requirements to address the distinctive needs of the digital equipment.
• Steered team to revise the layout of functional design drawings to reduce variances while maintaining the unique needs of the functional and implementation drawings.
• Created separation criteria for controlling redundant mechanical equipment, redesigned the secondary-plant algorithms to ensure consistency with new requirements and guided a team to conceptualize a new algorithm, cabling and termination assignments in compliance with the new criteria.
• Reverse-engineered the Temelín turbine control system and turbine-driven feed water pump control system designs to establish functional criteria and compared findings with the Westinghouse standard designs. Converted these from a Soviet-analog implementation to a digital control system. Recommended modifications to pass a customer-witnessed factory acceptance test.
• Met with the Czech clients to pinpoint acceptable solutions for the reactor and turbine systems, and then led team to produce an integrated control philosophy for the plant and design the control coordinator. The systems have functioned well since 2001.
• Wrote specifications for the new system to meet requirements for automating startup of individual plant systems to provide a uniform operator interface integral to the sequential logic and stored in a database for easy revision. EDUCATION & PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
