Study on Steam Turbines, Group Leader

This project report presents a detail study about the working and maintenance of steam turbine in a Thermal Power Project.

●Conducted detailed study on the types of turbines and working temperatures and pressures.

●Participated in performance calculations of pneumatic pressure actuators for power-plant maintenance team..

●Performed complete performance calculation for a period of two weeks (under the supervision of the Section Engineer) of the turbine systems, which included the, Vibrations of the shaft, lubrication levels, Inlet and outlet temperatures and pressures, structural fatigue of the turbine blades and maintenance of the systems.

●Reported to the Maintenance Engineer with the findings and proposed changes in lubrication levels and control of inlet pressures and temperatures for quieter and less fatigued running of turbine.

Engine Experience:

●Took classes on propulsion systems for last six years ranging from internal combustion engines to Air Breathing Supersonic combustion engines.

●Clear understanding of engine and their performance evaluation. Worked as Teaching Assistant for Propulsion I and Propulsion II courses during undergrad, where I was responsible for teaching about different engines and clarifying doubts to students under the supervision of Asst. Professor.

Auto CAD and Catia V5:

During bachelor's program, took two courses on Machine and tool design, which gave me better understating about the drafting techniques and GD&T.

Worked on drafting different machine parts on paper using different drafting techniques.

Used Auto CAD for creating the 3D objects for the drafted tools and machine parts.

As the final class project, worked on creating a complete fuselage section using the specifications provided in Auto CAD.

Took formal training in CATIA V5 and worked on various tool design assignments.

Diesel Engine Calibration Experience:

●During undergrad, I took classes on Propulsion systems where I learned a great deal about all internal combustion systems.

●During the period of one year, I closely worked on calibrating different Diesel and Gas engines in the Propulsion laboratory. This allowed for me to build a very good understanding of the diesel engines and all the performance characteristics which affect the overall performance of the engine.

●Lab assistant for Propulsion laboratory for a year where my duties involved maintaining and calibrating the test engines for the experiment purposes.

●During an independent project I worked on calibrating a very old and used 7 hp diesel engine for running the propeller of our model single seat aircraft. I worked on the fuel injection setting with reference to rpm. I installed a hand held throttle system to extract the power required (5hp during run-up). It was successful project; the engine was successfully installed into the model aircraft and performed the land run as we anticipated.

Turbo Chargers/ Turbo Machinery Experience:

●I have a very good technical understanding on Turbo machinery. I have learned about turbo systems for the major part of last five years.

●During the summer project National Thermal Power plant, I worked on the turbochargers used in the Diesel powered turbines. I have good knowledge of the performance enhancement that these turbo chargers provide to the given diesel engine. I learned that for a given engine, if there is a turbo charger attached the volumetric efficiency would be greatly enhanced.

●I learned about maintenance (cooling and lubrication) of the turbo chargers, since their operational spin rates are too high.

Achievements:

●Won second prize for Technical Presentation (80 participants), MLR College of Engg. & Tech, Zavtra, 2011 and 2012.

οPresented technical presentation on “Rocket Nozzles”.

οPerformed a research study on atmospheric and vacuum uses of the Nozzles, the 1–D analysis of gas flow in rocket engine nozzle, specific impulse, aerostatic back-pressure and optimal expansion of the rocket nozzles.

οPresented the research study results and details of the operations of two nozzle designs.

●Presented paper at National Conference, GITAMS University, Hyderabad, India, 2013.

οPresented technical presentation on “Hypersonic Flight Regimes”.

οConducted research study on hypersonic propulsion, air-breathing propulsion technology and current efforts at NASA Langley to develop various analytical, computational, and experimental design tools and their application in the development of future hypersonic air-breathing propulsion.

οThe study also included SCRamjet engine (supersonic combustion ramjet) working principle and construction.

οPresented a brief historical overview of research, current advancement and future projects on Hypersonic Flight regimes.
