Current position
Consultant Ophthalmologist at Bansara Eye Care Centre Current responsibilities
The work here includes seeing patients in the outpatient clinic four days a week and operating two days a week. I also participate in selected outreach camps. I take lectures/clinics for Optometry students. This is a relatively new institution and hence residency programmes have not started yet. I perform the following surgical procedures regularly:
Manual Small Incision Cataract Surgery (modified Blumental technique using anterior chamber maintainer) and rigid/foldable lens implantation
Dacryocystorhinostomy Intubation / Dacryocystectomy
Pterygium excision with limbal autograft (sutureless)
Entropion correction (Weis and Quickert procedures)
Trauma: lid laceration repair canalicular intubation, corneal and scleral tear suturing
Enucleation/evisceration with implant
I perform the following surgical procedures infrequently:
Trabeculectomy
Phacoemulsification cataract surgery
Intravitreal injections
Choroidal drainage, glue and contact lens
Squint surgeries
Laser procedures regularly that I regularly do:
Panretinal photocoagulation
Macular lasers (grid/focal/modified grid)
Nd:YAG capsulotomy
Nd:YAG iridotomy
Responsibilities during residency
As my current work experience after residency does not exceed 2 years, I would like to highlight my responsibilities during residency. My wide exposure to a variety of conditions and surgical training during residency might obviate the need for more number of years of work experience as a criterion for most employers.
Clinical: I worked up patients who were admitted in the wards as well as supervised the work of the junior residents. Five days a week, I used to see patients in the outpatient department. Once a week, I used to operate (cataracts- manual small incision cataract surgery and phacoemulsification, dacryocystorhinostomy, pterygium surgery with sutureless limbal autograft, intravitreal Bevacizumab injections, corneal perforation: glue and contact lens, choroidal drainage) and assist surgical cases (vitrectomies, lid surgeries, keratoplasties, orbitotomies, squint surgeries) in the operation theatre. The days that I was on call, I supervised the management of the junior residents and operated on ocular trauma cases (lid laceration repair, corneal/scleral tear suturing, lens matter aspiration, intravitreal antimicrobials). I attended the clinical meeting once a week with the Radiologists for discussing the CT/MRI images of the patients we had managed/were managing. Teaching: I took lectures for medical students and the Optometry students. During the academic sessions involving only residents which are held once a week, topic wise teaching was done. The junior residents used to discuss doubts and optimal patient management options during the outpatient department working hours with me.
