I was Responsible for analyzing the internal and exterior parts of the product line.

This testing is performed through chemical and physical testing using traditional and state of the art instruments such as XRF units, Spectrophotometers, Coulometric, Salt spray units to mention a few.

Also responsible in performing qualifying tests for on going NSF audits

After 16 months my temp contract ended due to lack of work.

PPG INDUSTRIES, Belcan Temp services August 2012 – March 2013

Cleveland, OH

PPG Industries / Cleveland develops OEM and refinish systems for primarily the automotive industry.

Chemical technician / Ford Development team

Support the development team in the Ford division.

Developed and tested new product lines for the China market. Included but not limited to a primer system, a basecoat which was pigmented and mica based, and a clear coat. The above systems were two different separate systems - both solvent and waterborne in nature.

Interacted with Chinese counterparts during this process. Products developed and supported are currently going through the final phases to be approved.

Duties included:

Development and making of paint using raw materials from suppliers.

Analytical testing of finished paint systems.

Spraying out of systems using hand sprayers and Spraymation units.

Special spray outs for waterborne systems were done in controlled environments.

Pigment grinding using a bead mill for system dependant tint paste.

Typical paint testing equipment used including but not limited to hardness testers, Tucan indenters, viscometers. Most of the testing and equipment that I became familiar with are in my previous paint positions.

LIGHT CURABLE COATINGS Oct 2006 – Sept 2010

Light Curable Coatings is a company that develops UV cured coatings.

Chemist / Formulator / Lab Manager

Worked on a team that developed chemistry to cure out high pigmented paint systems that have durable, weather resistant primers and top coats. Coatings were high performance and corrosion resistant. Solvent free, 100 % solids UV curable coating.

Project centered on the development of UV coatings for Boeing and the Department of Defense (DoD) - verified test data that continued federal grant funding.

Worked on developing a UV curable system that can be applied to refinish bath tubs and resurfacing storage tanks.

First employee to be hired in. During the next two years staff grew to a total of six people working in two labs.

Duties included:

Organized the two labs and trained the new people who were unfamiliar with coatings procedures on applications and cure outs.

Trained personnel in using the lab testing equipment and evaluating the coatings.

Responsibility for troubleshooting and repairing equipment used in the lab representing a significant cost savings in avoiding outsourced repair needs. This included the lab’s Fusion curing units, QUV exposure units, Salt spray units.

Calibrated equipment on a regular basis and checked output of the curing units.

Conducted weekly inventory and ordered supplies, chemical additives, lab equipment, consumable lab products.

Equipment included but was not limited to: Salt fog cabinets, QUV cabinets, Fusion UV curing units, colorimeters, viscometers, Ph meters, abrasion testers, pendulum hardness testers, UV cure equipment, GE impact testers, high speed mixers including DAC 150 & DAC 250, UV power puck radiometer.

(In September 2010, Federal funding was cut and jobs were eliminated.)

EFKA is a chemical additive manufacturer supplying the paint, ink, and plastics industry.

Product line includes resins, surfactants, dispersants, defoamers, stabilizers, and UV products.

Associate Scientist / Formulator / Lab Manager

Duties included:

Application work for internal data gathering in paint systems, gel coats, inks and plastics.

Customer service through technical recommendation including lab projects to troubleshoot more difficult systems.

From 2002, worked on projects for customers that were either production issues or developmental in nature. Most of these lab projects resulted in improvement and / or fixes for the customer resulting in increased business for EFKA.

Went from $ 1 million in sales in 2001 to $ 3 million in 2004 before the Ciba purchase.

Pigment formulation including long term studies in pigment dispersing and stability studies

Improved the pigment performance in different applications, including paint, plastic, and ink systems.

Managed 200 plus chemical products in warehouse.

Shipped inventory to customers in the form of samples and production stock.

Developed and improved the inventory tracking system that allowed us to track lot #s of products we shipped. This improved the ability for the user to monitor and follow up with customers.

Responsible for the MSDS data base for the EFKA Additive product line in North America, included updating the data base for accuracy, answering inquiries from customers and shippers. Generating copies on a daily basis. Verifying compliance for federal inspectors.

Haz-Mat trained and was certified to handle and ship dangerous goods both by ground and air.

Responsible for classification and disposal of chemical waste.
