In 2005-2009, I was appointed principal of a forty-five years Pre-K-12 school that was on the brink of closing down for declining enrollment and decrease of financing. This was a great challenge but within two years enrollment increased by 60% and the schoolʼs finances was stabilized where within two years we were able to raise $250,000, and build a brand new library, defunct for tens years to the tune of $100,000. I first changed the culture of the school by giving the students, faculty and staff, parents and alumni a seat at the table of influence. By doing this everyone felt a sense of pride and was eager to contribute to the success of the school. The students began winning many academic and sports awards. Most importantly, the students was happy to be in school again. When I left the school it was one of the top “to-goto” schools on the island of St. Thomas, VI. My empathy for seeing schooling from the view of the student and my passion for education, working in collaboration with all the stakeholders was the reason for our success.
