I completed my under graduate course from JJM Medical college, Davangere, Karnataka, India (JJMC). JJMC is affiliated to Mysore University, Karnataka, India. JJMC is recognized by the Medical Council of India.
The MBBS course consists of 3 professional years each of which is one and a half year duration. The first professional year covers basic sciences – Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry. The second professional year covers – Para clinical subjects – Pharmacology, Pathology, Forensic medicine, Microbiology and Preventive and Social Medicine. The third professional Year covers, Medicine, Including Internal medicine, Paediatrics, and Psychiatry; Surgery including General surgery, Anaesthesia and Orthopaedic surgery; Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Oto-Rhino-Laryngology. During each professional year the university conducted examination which included theory papers, practical examinations and Viva Voce examination with a panel of 4 examiners. I successfully completed the course in January 1994.
INTERNSHIP
My compulsory rotatory internship for 1 year was completed in 2 institutions, JJM Medical College and Government Medical College, Thrissur. THE TRAINING INSTITUTE – JJM MEDICAL COLLEGE
The JJM Medical College was established in 1967. It has 2 hospitals for teaching, a 400 bedded super speciality hospital - Bapuji hospital and 800 bedded Chigitheri Hospital. It’s a tertiary –level referral centre. Training is imparted to both undergraduate and post graduate students.
RESIDENTS
The Postgraduate trainees are selected for a residency program on basis of All India competition. The trainee enters a particular department as residents (equivalent to trainee registrar in Australia) undergo 3 years of training qualifies for postgraduate degree examination (M.D. in Psychiatry) which is conducted by Rajiv Gandhi university of Health sciences for which external as well as internal examiners are appointed.
THE TRAINING DEPARTMENT
The Department of Psychiatry at JJMC have a 20 bedded psychiatric inpatient unit and an outpatient unit in Bapuji hospital and 30 bedded psychiatric inpatient unit and outpatient unit in Chigitheri Hospital. It is a tertiary referral hospital and the catchment area comprises of 4 districts in Central Karnataka, India. The training department offers treatment of all specialities in Psychiatry: Adult, Child and Adolescent, Geriatrics, Addiction Psychiatry, Consultation-liaison and Psychiatric rehabilitation.
TRAINING/TEACHING
In the 3 year training program the trainee undergoes a written and clinical examination at the end of first year and second year and at the end of third year takes the university exams after submission of dissertation. The trainee has to undergo rotations in both the hospitals during the 3 years. The general objective of the training program is to enable the candidate to acquire knowledge, skills and desirable attitudes in the principles and practise of psychiatry and gain proficiency in the widely accepted theory and techniques.

WORK EXPERIENCE POST GRADUATION
I joined Academy of Medical Science (ACME) also known as Pariyaram Medical College, Pariyaram, Kannur, Kerala, India as a Lecturer in the Department of psychiatry on 17/05/2004. ACME is a medical college which train undergraduate medical students. Training is imparted to postgraduate students in some specialities. ACME has an annual intake of 100 students for the course of MBBS. The institution has a 1000 bedded tertiary referral multispecialty hospital attached to it. Patients are referred from the three districts of northern Kerala.
Department
The psychiatry department in ACME has an outpatient clinic and a 30 bedded inpatient unit. The psychiatry department was developed on a General Hospital Psychiatric Unit (GHPU) model; cases of adult psychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, geriaritic psychiatry, addiction psychiatry and consultation and liaison psychiatry are managed in the department. There was extensive cross-referral among the various departments of the Institute for specific problems.
The faculty consists of 3 consultant psychiatrists, 2 lecturers, a psychologist and a social worker.
