Aug 2014 – Present: Writer In the final process of editing my first book. Writing the second book.
Aug 2002 – Aug 2014: Database Administrator – SHAZAM Inc. Created logical and physical data models for SHAZAM’s corporate database. Database supports corporate initiative to rewrite the core business functions. This mission-critical project was closely scrutinized by Sr. Management and subject to a high-volume, zero downtime OLTP environment.
Created a data dictionary that tied database elements to end user reports. It was designed to allow developers and end users to see where data was coming from and where it was being consumed.
Created a database change request log where developers would request changes to the database. This kept a permanent record of who requested what, when, and why. Once implemented, the changes would be posted to the data dictionary.
Developed a cost accounting system to correlate 500+ phone bills with company’s telecom-based network supporting 4,500 ATMs. SQL Server database with business logic in SQL Server stored procedures. Also developed MS Access front-end. After integr ating all phone bill information into the application, $85,000 annually was identified in billing errors in favor of SHAZAM.
Nov 2001 – Aug 2002: Business Analyst – SHAZAM Inc. Implemented customized Siebel application to support the Customer Relationship Management business needs for Customer Service and Network Services.
Oct 2000 - Nov 2001: Technical Project Lead – SHAZAM Inc. Designed and implemented SQL Server/Visual Basic phone bill management system to integrate data related to 500+ phone bills with the Finance accounts payable system. Established an interface between the two systems, eliminating significant dual entry of data.
Converted a number of DOS-based dBase databases to SQL Server databases with MS Access user interfaces. These applications provided significantly better edits, referential integrity, report access, and disaster recovery features.
Apr 2000 – Oct 2000: Senior Programmer/Analyst – SHAZAM Inc. Designed and implemented automated VRU ATM monitoring system. SQL Server database with business logic in SQL Server stored procedures. Visual Basic front-end. Monitors 4,500 ATMs across 28 states. To date, application has notified member financial institutions of nearly 3 million ATM events, placing over 5 million phone calls, and has run with minimal maintenance required for over five years.
Oct 1999 – Apr 2000: Independent Consultant. Specializing in database/system design for small companies, based on SQL Server database/MS Access architecture.
May 1998 – Oct 1999: Systems Consultant – Logical Solutions, Inc. Systems consultants typically had total responsibility for their projects. Created a benefits management system using Visual Basic and SQL Server for a large insurance company; a system for Medicare Fraud investigators using Microsoft Access, and complex reports for a software development company’s medical clinic-based system. These reports were written with Seagate Crystal Reports using SQL stored procedures based in Microsoft SQL Server. This project inherently required a high level of data analysis and verification, and often resulted in identification of problems within the client’s software and data.
Aug 1995 – May 1998: Senior Programmer/Analyst – Iowa Foundation for Medical Care / Government division. Designed and developed Windows based medical data collection software. Responsible for verifying, maintaining, and reporting on Medicare claims data for three states, as well as educating users of the data’s user interface to improve accuracy of data entered. Converted and loaded data from various sources into these Medicare databases.
Jun. 1990 – Aug 1995: Programmer/Analyst – Iowa Foundation for Medical Care / Information Systems division. Developed DOS and Windows based medical data collection software. Created medical license tracking software for the Maine Board of Licensure in Medicine and the Iowa Board of Medical Examiners for Windows/Windows 95. Also provided user support for above systems. Provide DOS and Windows support for IFMC staff.
Jun. 1989 – Jun 1990: Computer Programmer – Softactics. Created and implemented software to convert medical billing data for electronic insurance claims filing for 18 states.
