Project Consultant: September 2009 to May 2010, Ryerson University

Department of Chemical Engineering Water / Wastewater Division

Exposed to the relevant legislations for municipal water/wastewater treatment facilities. These would include provincial legislations such as the Environmental Protection Act, Ontario Water Resources Act, Safe Drinking Water Act, and Occupational Health & Safety Act.

Worked on the plant design aspect of water and wastewater treatment. These would include preparing hypothetical cost estimates for technical proposals of existing plants. Participate in developing the costs and sizing of anaerobic digesters and three phased fluidized bed reactors. Developed reports / findings and presented them to the department.

Created process flow diagrams, piping and instrumentation diagrams using a combination of MS Visio and Auto Cad. These drawings were used to strategize on the layout of the equipment for optimal performance and minimize potential plant foot print.

Development Student Program (Co-op): January 2008 to September 2008, Bruce Power

Worked with the Fisheries Act to ensure that heated water coming out of the power station would not create an adverse effect for the surrounding aquatic habitat. Routinely kept temperature profiles for both the temperatures of the lake and the temperatures of the effluent to ensure that Dissolved Oxygen levels where within acceptable ranges.

Developed an understanding of their water treatment plant which was used for reactor cooling, feed water make-up, fire protection and for drinking water. The water was separated to two portions the domestic water and de-mineralized water which was given to make up for lost steam for the turbines. De-mineralized water was critical for the turbines as the rapid heating of the water would create oxidizing agents that would corrode the turbines.

Monitored with the help of peers the water softening ion where the water would go through a bed of ion exchange and undesirable ions were replaced by more desirable ions.

Assisted in the preparation of budgets, cost/benefits analysis, various manuals, standard operating procedures, regulatory and performance reports.

Process Engineer in Training (Co-op): September 2006 to December 2006, Radient

Technologies,

Inspected floor plans, process flow diagrams and instrumentation diagrams. Worked in multi disciplinary teams to be able to complete the building of the pilot plant.

Developed Radient’s solid waste system. Helped design a super sac loader and un-loader that met ministry waste standards for hazardous disposal. This was streamlined and used to improve efficiency of the pilot process by 18% and free staffing to complete more research and process optimization.
