U.S. Steel Corporation 2001 – 2015
Safety Engineer / Safety Manager
Safety and Industrial Hygiene Administer focused on ensuring safe, productive work environments for ~6,000 employees (at peak) across 3 steel mill facilities, working closely with 5 different local unions to ensure safety was not comprised for workers.
Drove safety improvement across a division of ~ 6,000 employees (at peak) and ~2,000,000 man-hours worked providing communication and leadership needed to implement U.S. Steel Safety processes.
Shifted a work environment plagued with incidents. Reduced 400 injuries in the division in 2001 (with some injuries being very severe) to 3 incidents in 2014.
Developed a mindset across the division that all accidents are preventable. Worked to shift existing mindset to understand that even though it was a steel mill, that many of these incidents and injuries could be prevented.
Took a department with 8 recordable OSHA injuries for 1,000 employees in 1 year, to zero OSHA recordable accidents the following year. Maintained the record for 2 additional years using communication and team building.
Received bonus for effectively managing OSHA’s 6-month audit of U.S.S. (first steel mill to ever be audited by OSHA).
Consistently rated “above average” in communication fields; e.g. “builds effective working relationships” and “manages diversity and inclusion.”
Second highest rating overall out of 12 team members for 3 years in a row during a difficult financial period for the company. Consistently trained incoming team members to ensure ethical, sound, responsible teams.
Assisted in the development and delivery of training, providing technical and compliance-related support.
US Navy
Chief / Damage Control
Performed maintenance and repair of damage control equipment and systems. Planned, supervised and performed tasks necessary for damage control, ship stability, preservation of watertight integrity, fire fighting, and Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear Explosive (CBRNE) defense.
Challenged to ensure the right, ethical choices were made even when they were the most difficult choices.
Contributed to a $3.4M cost savings in the first year by initiating a benefit suggestion to the Navy.
Saved the U.S. Government millions of dollars and awarded the “Silver Hammer Award” for reducing unnecessary wasteful spending by streamlining a method for acid cleaning of the ships’ sewage systems.
Consistently came in within or under departmental budget. The Command received high marks for cost savings.
