Senior Designer/Project Manager

Technical System Sales

Finishing System Design

Project Management

Dynamic results driven technical individual with a 20+ year record of achievement directing the various engineering groups I have been involved with through the often precarious waters of Finishing Systems Design. I balanced optimal design with maximum results at minimum costs, which allowed us to be successful in a highly competitive marketplace. I have a tenacious ability to work with the team to manage the project(s) at hand, securing customer loyalty, while forging strong relationships with external business partners.

Key Strengths and Abilities:

Honesty

Integrity

Ability to listen

An ability to get to the root of a problem

Ability to multi-task

Able to ‘think on my feet’ while working with others

Mechanical Design

Electrical Controls & Integration Design

Architectural Design

Gas Controls & Integration Design

As a considered expert in Paint Finishing Systems and their design, I have been called upon on more than one occasion to give assessments of existing systems to assist with code compliances and code interpretations, specifically NFPA 33, the standard for Spraying and Painting using Flammable and Combustible Materials, and NFPA 86 the standards for Ovens and Furnaces. I am always looking for the simplest way to achieve the most difficult tasks, as I believe difficult does not equate to complexity, and design wisdom equals simplicity in both form and function.

Professional Experience

Pintura Finishing, Finishing System Solutions Inc, & Specialty Services, Cambridge, Ontario.

Owner/Designer/Project Manager/Technical Sales (Oct 2011 to Present)

Leaving Annadale I started my own Sole Proprietor Company, Specialty Services, and continued Selling Finishing Systems and their components to the people I had come to know, as well as to others who I became associated with. I continued doing what I had been doing with Annadale, but now for myself. I achieved good success, and went forward to Incorporate as Finishing Systems Solutions Inc. I re-brand Finishing Systems Solutions Inc as Pintura Finishing Inc. in May 2014, when I found a company in the US with a similar name. Although I am able to complete all the necessary functions within the business of selling, designing, purchasing and having installed a Finishing System, I find I am only one person. I am designing when I should be selling, and keeping the books while I should be installing. By doing all things, I am doing nothing well. The systems knowledge I have gathered in my lifetime to this point has helped me to become invaluable to the people I have provided system designs for, but unfortunately there isn’t enough of them to keep going with this venture.

It is my hope that I find a company that appreciates my knowledge and abilities and provides me with the position and opportunity to achieve my personal and professional goals.

Annadale Finishing Systems, Cambridge, Ontario.

Designer/Project Manager/Technical Sales (Jan 2001 to Mar 2011)

Where there were 6 senior designers when I started with Annadale in 2001, the economy and the downturn in the manufacturing sector in Ontario reduced that number to just me by 2004. I held the position of being the entire Engineering Department for the next seven years. I worked with the sales team to provide technical backup and assist with the procurement of purchase orders, and often on smaller jobs doing the entire quote and sales presentation myself. As purchase orders came in, I designed the specific components of the finishing systems to meet the customer’s expectations, all the while staying within budget. Detailed bills of materials helped the purchasing department obtain the key components needed. I would create all the mechanical, electrical, structural, gas train drawings required to fabricate all of the components. I would interact with the various fabricators to ensure quality was maintained and that we would get what we wanted, when we needed it. I would apply for and obtain all the required authoritative approvals for the system.

Once the design was completed, the fabrication started, the project was scheduled for installation based on the timeline expected by the customer, and as outlined in our proposal. I would line up the Mechanical, Electrical and the Gas installers and specify my expectations of them. Depending on the size / complexity of the projects, I would spend as little or as much time on site during installation to ensure the project was completed on time and within budget. I used MS Project to ensure my timelines were met, and everyone stayed on track. During the project installation, I prepared the maintenance manuals that were required for each job. Upon installation completion, I would be on site to personally train each of the operators on the operation and maintenance of the system, then hand over two copies of the maintenance manuals for their reference.

Selected Achievements:

-The design I incorporated into the waterwash booths effectively reduced our customer’s yearly maintenance costs by 300% over a similar system they have in house.

-I completed a project that would normally have taken 2 months to install to 18 days, which minimized down time for our customer.

-I designed a system that a filter media could be dried in 4 hours where it took two full days previously.

-I designed a system that was cost effective to install and allowed the customer to get up and running (making money) but included provisions for ramping up the throughput to 4 times the capacity for minimal additional capital outlay once he could afford it.

General Motors, Oshawa, Ontario

Electrical Designer/Outside Trades Supervisor (Mar 1992 to Sept 2000)

I was hired on at General Motors as a contract designer, to take over the duties of an Electrical Designer who was retiring. I personally was in charge of over 15,000 electrical drawings that comprised the entire electrical matrix for the ‘new car paint shop’ as the car plant in Oshawa was referred to then. It was my function to be involved with any new projects and ensure that the electrical drawings were created, updated or maintained so that there was always an accurate record of what was ‘on the floor’. Due to my constant interactions with outside trades, and also because of my familiarity with burners, I was given the role of Outside Trades Supervisor. I monitored and supervised all work that was being done by CCS Combustion, Honeywell Controls, Johnson Controls, and Trane Chillers.

Selected Achievements:

- I was given the task of designing and having built a ‘deluge system’ that took the car body as it came from the welding plant, dipped it into a tank of water and back out again flooding the car body with 1200 usgpm of water both as it went into and out of the tank, to flush the ‘weld balls’ from the interior of the car prior to entering the pre-treatment system. It was installed during a summer shut down, without a problem. I handled the mechanical and the electrical design on this project, as well as supervising the installation.

-a unique part of my job was to balance all of the air flow in the spray booths which I did on an almost monthly basis.

Tem-Pro Systems, Ontario, Canada.

Mechanical/Electrical Drafting/Designer (May 1980 to Aug 1986)

Just out of Seneca College, I was hired as a junior mechanical draftsman. I began to learn the paint finishing system industry. To become more educated, during the slowdown of 1982 I asked (one of the owners) Sam Schneider to hold evening courses that taught the various specifics to how a Finishing System was designed. He showed us everything he knew and I wrote it down in a binder I still have today. I was found telling an electrician how to troubleshoot a burner circuit, and was asked how did I know what to look for? I said it seems to me electricity flows like water, and where the water (current) stops, that must be where the problem is. That is when I took a night course in Electrical Drafting and Design to help me gain a better understanding of electrical/electronic circuits and their various symbols, and from then on, I became Tem-Pro’s Electrical Designer.

Education:

Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technologies, Advanced Drafting and Design, Mechanical/piping Diploma 1978/79

George Brown College, Gas Fitter II and Gas Fitter I programs, Diploma 1982/83 (night courses)

George Brown College, Electrical Drafting & Design, Diploma 1985 (night course)
