Skills:

Team work: In my role in the Canadian Forces I gained experience managing both skilled teams and teams with limited experience and knowledge, and gained crucial understanding of when to step up in a leadership role and when to be cooperative and collegial; I learned the importance of building community as well as building the team, to understand how the team fits into the big picture and the importance of developing and maintaining important connections; I managed teams on a daily basis, setting work priorities guiding and monitoring performance.

Leadership: I have had soldiers under my direction many times and understand that the authoritative form of leadership is not always the best choice; it is best to gain buy-in from the followers. There is always a requirement for discretion as a leader that keeps the leader distanced from their followers, but this does not mean cold and uncaring. The leader genuinely seeks the welfare of their followers and applauds their success without fear of helping them rectify their failures.

Problem-Solver: I have extensive experience in problem solving gained while working as a two-tier help-desk operator and in the Forces. I had to learn how to manage equipment and personnel in austere environments, provided services to over 800 personnel, and have deployed on missions in remote locations to set up communications links and advise on system security matters.

Time Management: Managing a team on a daily basis, setting work priorities and dealing with difficult, time-sensitive situations. Ensuring time spent in class with students is productive by planning for the main lesson while having extra material held in reserve.

Planning: ability to assess the situation, determine what needs to be done and set realistic goals for both myself and the team; as operations Sergeant at 734 Comm Sqn I ensured that realistic exercises were in place to challenge the troops and officers providing opportunities for learning. These exercises were planned well in advance including logistical support and manning requirements.

Communications: excellent written and oral communication skills; wrote personal evaluation reports and personnel development reports that accurately reflected subordinates skills and weaknesses; these reports were often effective in leading to promotion for the members; comfortable speaking in front of groups large and small; while overseas gave the Afghanistan surge IT security briefings to up to 700 troops simultaneously; good listening skills developed providing customer service and constructive feedback to students.

Teaching skills: administer structured assessments, foster a classroom environment conducive to learning, develop and implement lesson plans, use alternative forms of instruction where appropriate. Flexible in addressing differing learning styles in a diverse classroom, adept at creating metaphors and engaging students.

Course Design: Designs course materials based on objectives determined by stakeholders while considering bridging materials between objectives. Uses multiple sources of information when creating a course to offer students nuanced views of the material. While at SIAST designed a Windows 7 course, VoIP, and Introduction to Linux for the computer networking technician certificate program.

Administration: In all of my employment experiences the importance of keeping current in the needs of administration are paramount. Ensuring that materials and clearances are ready for exercise and completing reports to provide feedback and allow for future planning is a primary function of an educator and a leader.

Facilitation Skills:

Conflict Resolution: Uses conflict resolution techniques to mitigate disagreements between subordinates and peers. Recognizes the value of constructive conflict in the workplace with the need to minimize negative non-productive conflict.

Technical skills: Adept at learning technical skills quickly, a background in; network administration, LAN services, HF Communications gateway, node operator, hardware and software configuration, operating systems. Multiple applications such as MS Office, Open office, some Adobe products and multiple operating systems to name only a few.
