•Collaborate with physicians in the performance of treatments and examinations, the administration of medications, and the provision of direct patient care in convalescence and rehabilitation.
•Handleinfants/small babies, assessing the infant’s health problems,
•Administering neonatal healthcare such as specialized feeding, supplemental oxygen, and providing education for baby’s healthcare and precautions.
• Formulate nursing care plans and assess, plan, implement and evaluate the effectiveness of treatments in these plans.

Detailed Duties and Responsibilities as NICU Nurse
Respiratory Care
*Provides respiratory support.
*Make sure the tube is properly placed (that the baby's oxygen saturation remains above a certain level and that blood gasses show good oxygen exchange are all crucial for survival)
* Make sure the tubing is patent, tape the tube in place and check it each shift after adjusting the setting by resp. therapist.
* Keep prongs in place and assessing oxygenation levels if baby is on continuous positive air pressure, or CPAP.
* Adjust the settings, check the prongs for placement and assess the effectiveness of the treatment for baby on nasal cannula oxygen.
* Frequent chest PT or suctioning to keep the lungs clear of secretions.
Feeding
*Promotes breast feeding and if bottle feed, fed very slowly.
* Runs intravenous feedings at precise amounts; set up IV pumps and maintain feeding rates.
* Checks for the present of blood in the stool or urine.
* Checks for input and output.
Medications
*Observes 10 rights in giving medication.
*Runs blood at a precise rate via pump and verify the blood type and double check with coworkers. In addition to watching for signs of a transfusion reaction.
*Starts IVs and draw bloods.
* Frequently assess the IV sites for skin breakdown or other skin damage.
Psychological Support
*Reduce stimulation by dimming lights and covering the isollette

*Endorsing the baby to oncoming shift highlighting changes in the baby's condition.
*Gives comprehensive reports
*Gives concise writing and accurate notes
