oHonor Council Fall and Spring Semesters 2013: My job was to enforce the statutes that hold our members to a higher standard such as minimum GPA and community service hours. If a member was short on either of these requirements or was observed acting inappropriately in a manner degrading to the name of the fraternity it was my job to penalize accordingly.

Work Experience-

Levittown School District. I have worked as a cleaner at Wisdom Lane Middle School, part of the Levittown School District, from the summer of 2007 until the summer of 2011. I worked 40 hours a week. This job taught me hard work and the responsibility of having a job.

University of Miami Rathskeller. I worked at the restaurant on campus to help pay for college freshman and half of sophomore year where I took on management roles at times. Here I learned about working as a team to give the customers the best service we could offer. Learning teamwork skills is important for my future because I hope to work with a team to help patients in the future, and to do research in the lab.

Research Experience-

HHMI Biology Lab. This was a research-based class I took my first semester of college and it made me realize I really enjoyed research. We looked at SNP’s in 2 populations of mosquito fish. To do this we used PCR, gel electrophoresis, and spectrophotometry.

oPoster presentation describing the genotypic similarities between the two populations

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. During the summer of 2012 I worked over 40 hours a week in an infectious disease lab under the principal investigator Dr. Bettina Fries. Here I worked on Klebsiella pneumoniae. The goal of the lab is to develop an antibody for immunotherapy due to K.pneumoniae’s increasing resistance to antibiotics. My job was to characterize the different strains we obtained from sick patients. I characterized them by molecular serotyping, multi-locus sequence typing, and pulsed field gel electrophoresis. I learned a lot about working in a lab from making agar plates to preparing and running a pulsed field gel electrophoresis. I presented a poster along with many of my colleagues to show what we had accomplished over the summer.

Dr. Cote’s Lab at the University of Miami. This is a pathology lab where I worked primarily with Dr. Torres although I did learn about the other projects going on also. With Dr. Torres I learned about immunofluorescent staining. I stained captured circulating tumor cells and stained them with DAPI and A-488 for endothelia receptor A. Then I learned how to view them with the microscope and how to analyze the image to predict whether the cells I stained were cancer cells or not.

Dr. Ager’s Parasitology Lab at the University of Miami. Dr. Ager’s lab focuses on both Malaria and Leishmania. The goal of the lab is to discover, develop, evaluate, and improve new drug therapies for these diseases. Some of my jobs included the ex vivo culturing of Leishmania panamensis, taking the weights of the mice, taking blood smears from mice, counting malaria infected RBC’s, and teaching new students.

Experiences Related to Prehealth-

Hospital Volunteer. I volunteered about 6 hours a week at Nassau University Medical Center in New York for 3 months. I helped out the hospital as a way to give back to my community and it helped me to learn how hospitals are run.

Shadowed neuro-surgeons at University of Miami Hospital

Shadowed an orthopedic surgeon in Vero Beach, FL

Shadowed an internist in Brooklyn, NY

Certified EMT-Basic in Miami where I did 200 hours of EMT work. In Miami I worked with a largely Hispanic population where I was able to communicate effectively with patients.

ER scribe for the Memorial Hospital System in Miramar, Florida and also at Stony Brook University Hospital. As a scribe I see all of the patients with the doctor, I record the entire encounter, and write a note for the doctor, which is signed and saved in each patient’s medical record. I am learning how physicians approach different situations. It is a beneficial experience because I am experiencing the dynamics of emergency rooms first hand. I am able to augment the quality of care for the patient by providing the physicians with more time to dedicate directly to patient care as opposed to writing notes. I also feel that by recording in the room I am able to obtain a more detailed and accurate history, thus adding to the continuity of care.

Community Service

Spinathon. An all day event on campus where you support your team as each member rides a stationary bike taking turns over 8 hours. The purpose was to raise money and support for the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center in Miami.

FunDay. A day dedicated to showing intellectually disabled people a good time. This is important to me because I feel the general public should be more accepting and aware of people with social and intellectual disabilities.

Greek Week. A week dedicated to fundraising for United Cerebral Palsy.

Read and Lead. This is a program in high school where high school students tutor elementary school students and help them with homework. This was important to me because I benefitted from it when I was in elementary school.

Volunteer with the Lexiebean Foundation where I adopted a child with leukemia for the holidays by giving her and her family gifts and things that they could not afford themselves. I also help them package and send out gifts.
