SUMMARY

I am current looking for work as a Database Engineer. I like to work with large datasets and have utilized a number of RDBMS and NoSQL technologies to store and analyze them. My experience managing all aspects of software development from using Agile techniques such as Scrum or Kanban. I'm also a strong developer and have created software pipelines using various languages and web applications using Django/RoR and PHP. I am well versed in a variety of programming languages and seek to use the skills to provide full stack development and web front ends.

Virginia Commonwealth University 08 / 2014 - Present

Bioinformatics Programmer/DBA & Big Data Specialist/Research Assistant

Database administrator and programmer for various micorbiome projects allowed me to design and implement Python Pipelines and REST API to perform metagenomic analysis then analyze and visualize the data within R and Django. I also engineered and adminsitrated databases to store clinical and biological data within MySQL/PostgreSQL as well as Cassandra, MongoDB and Hadoop/Hive. Each of these solutions was hand tested and the solution applied based on actual performan analytics. Other jobs included performance tuning of PostgreSQL and MySQL RDBMS optimization techniques at both an application and database level. Created a proof of principle model using Apache Hadoop (2.6.0) and Hive (0.14) as well as PostgreSQL Hadoop Foreign Data Wrapper using a small cluster of machines to handle Illumina 16S sequence data. Then diversified the pipeline to also handle Cassandra and MongoDB in a Microsoft Azure Cloud environment, this test data contained multiple data sets stored either in Postgres (smaller tables) or Hive (Largest table contained 80 billion rows).

Unix/Solaris Engineer and Security Analyst, Tangible Software 09 / 2009 - 09 / 2010

Held a Security Clearance and worked on Public Key Interface. Duties included writing change requests (CR) after using penetration testing techniques to identify RDBMS or OS vunlerabilities. This included managing security logs, intrusion detection and honey pot data, as well as analysis to identify potential threats. A change requests included authoring Perl, MS VBS, Unix/Solaris shell scripts and supporting technical documentation to check, and patch/repair or update to manage security vulnerabilities or adjust firewall/OS settings to prevent intrusions.

Started as simple contracts, progressed into a LLC in 2005. Initially focused on web authoring and hosting, progressed into multiple contracts, subcontracts, and employees handling large property management companies. Maintained and hosted Scalix and Exchange e-mail solutions. MSSQL, Oracle and PostgreSQL Database servers. Trained employees of multiple companies on Windows desktops and Citrix shared app ications.
