Research

Master Research

Research Assistant, Professor Annalisa Onnis- Hayden and April Gu 2013-Present

• Designed and maintained lab scale sequencing batch reactors with different operation conditions for two years.

• Performed chemistry and microbial batch tests for evaluating phosphorus-recovery capacity of waste activated sludge from Enhanced

Biological Phosphorus Removal (EBPR) process.

• Utilized a thorough knowledge of wastewater treatment process design and phosphorus-recovery techniques.

• Presented research results in several conferences by posters and speeches.

Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), Term Project

LCA for Alternative Upgrading Options of Wastewater Treatment Plant in MA Fall. 2013

• Evaluated environmental impacts of different wastewater treatment plant upgrading options by building new assemblies and unit

process in SimaPro and simulating the new treatment process in BioWin.

• Conducted sensitivity analysis, which included greenhouse gas emission, eutrophication, ozone depletion potential, human toxicity

potential and ecotoxicity, to compare the significance of each impact category.

• Moderated meetings with multiple groups, including clients, subcontractors, team members and professors, to set up clear goals and

scopes.

• Prepared and conducted effective presentations to different groups of audiences.

Spring. 2013

Surface Water Quality Modeling, Term Project

Modeling Total Phosphorus Containment in the Lower Charles River

• Utilized Qual2K software for modeling the flow/mass balance of total phosphorus concentration in the Lower Charles River.

• Visited sample sites to collect complete geographic location and detail point sources information.

• Presented the study results to the class to introduce and share the knowledge of Qual2K and the total phosphorus changes vs time in

the Charles River.

Employments

Research Assistant, Professor Annalisa Onnis-Hayden, Northeastern University 2013-2014

• Coordinated lab work schedule for two PH.D candidates and 10 undergraduate volunteers.

• Mentored two environmental engineering prospective students in high school with lab tasks and final report about phosphorus removal

and recovery from wastewater during 2013 Summer Young Scholars Program.
