Profile.

Experienced and organised Process/Manufacturing/Maintenance

Engineer/Manager in the World Class Manufacture of electronic Hi-Tec goods,

specializing in communication cables and connectors. Has experience in

factories that have gone through culture changes to enable Continuous

Improvement and TPM. Recently involved heavily within LEANPD philosophies

in my current role, working on a project going through the gate phases of

LEAN to enable design, development and manufacture of components to the

business requirements.

Currently in an engineering role, but would like to go back Maintenance

Management where I had 4 successful years reducing maintenance downtimes,

budgets and successfully opening up a second manufacturing unit within that

business. Time served apprentice in multi skilled Maintenance techiniques,

I was brought up in my career using TPM heavily and working with production

teams to enable improvements and cost reductions.

In my role as a Maintenance Manager at AFL, was responsible for numerous

Health and Safety protocols associated with Maintenance - Electrical

Safety, Work at Height etc., but also had other Safety protocols such as

Confined Space and Environmental.

Man managed 6 in house maintenance personnel and up to 20+ contractors. In

a shut down period was responsible for over 30 Maintenance people on site

at one time, on a yearly basis, which would be organized, efficient and

would achieve their targets in the tight timescales required by the

business.

Have always been involved with multi-functional teams on a production shop

floor environment, and thrives on new challenges and goals set. I was used

to this effect often in a culture change environment in my past couple of

roles as Maintenance Manager, Process Engineer and Quality Engineer.

Career Achievements:

2011 - Present: TE Connectivity Ltd - Global Manufacturing Engineer -

Total responsibility for ALL new manufacturing process

developments/improvements in the TE worldwide Aerospace, Military and

Defence Cable manufacturing organisation. Responsible for specing,

procuring and installation of new machinery and upgraded machinery in

cable plants worldwide.Ensure correct handover to Operations departments

with ALL relevant documentation/training complete. Also ensuring that

standardized processes have been instilled into the manufacturing unit

using LEAN PD techniques.

Management:

. On a day to day basis using various techniques, specifying new machinery

for new processes being developed by TE Connectivity. Problem solving

with the use of techniques such as TPM., 5S+1, S.P.C./Q.F.D., DFMEA etc.

and Project Management.

. Good team worker using modern problem solving techniques to resolve

problems/issues and establishing the root causes to solutions.

. 4 years experience in Maintenance and Facilities Management at AFL Ltd -

Swindon across 2 sites.

Technical:

. Key engineer in the development of new type approved cable processes,

with 100% pass rate in all Manufacturing and Testing, which achieve the

subsequent contracts. New Product Introduction is a key part of my

responsibilities and efforts as well as continuous improvement

techniques.

. Highly competent user of computer controlled machinery

using the Visual Basic and other systems.

. Likes to pick up new technologies and products to enhance

my product knowledge in an Engineering and Maintenance

capacity.

Marketing/Customers:

. Deal satisfactorily with customer/Supplier queries and problems after

delivery/supply of product both on a manufacturing and in situ basis. Eg:

Customer complaints - fault analysis with solutions implementation to

prevent re-occurrence.( TPM/TQM/QFD)

Resourcing: Responsible for the following Engineering projects:

. 2 x 1.5 million SZ stranding machines from Nextrom, Finland.

. 3 x 1.0 million SZ stranding machines from Tensor, Canada.

. 1 x 650,000 Aluminum/Paper Slitting Machine from Germany.

. 1 x 250,000 Pay-off units for existing SZ Cabling machine in Swindon.

. Establishing on time delivery of incoming Raw Materials for all

production lines when required alongside the shift leaders, eliminating

incoming faults etc.- eg: France/UK cable strength member ( Cost: 2.5 -

3 million per annum )

Personnel/Training:

. Day to day liaison with personnel to ensure effective communication.

. A trainer's award enables the training of the relevant personnel for

machines, in operation, materials control, IT and process handling.

. A team player being involved in Scrap Reduction - 125,000 per month

saving and development of new design type cables as an example in the

past.

Project Management: Has been responsible for the purchasing, installing,

commissioning and supervision of the following projects:

. 1992-1997 - Two High speed SZ Stranding machines from

Finland capable of 70 m/min costing 1.5 million each

project.

. 1996 - One High speed Slitting machine from Germany

capable of cutting Aluminium/Paper of up to 70 m/min

costing 650,000.

. 1997 - 2001 - Three High speed SZ Stranding machines from Canada capable

of 100 m/min costing 1.0 million each project.

. 1998 - 2001 - Establishing fault free/right first time/on time delivery

of input Raw materials from UK and France to enable the section to run at

an efficiency of 85%+.

As a result of the above, the companies comply with the E.U. directive on

suppliers' quality for the sections' machinery and products.

Creation of Maintenance and Facilities system for the AFL Swindon Plant, to

the implementation and operation success for a World Class Manufacturing

Facility.

2007 - 2011 Oct: AFL Ltd - Maintenance & Facilities Manager - Total

responsibility for ALL maintenance and facilities at the two AFL Swindon

Plants. Tasked with setting up a Maintenance department from scratch.

Introducing a Preventative Maintenance System using Japanese Lean

philosophies to cut down on machine breakdowns and increased efficiencies.

In charge of all Maintenance personnel including the use of contractors on

a 24/7 basis. Experienced in the use of Japanese maintenance philosophies

like MTTR/MTBF.

2002-2007: AFL Telecommunications - Manufacturing Engineer - Responsible

for Maintenance, Process Engineering and Continuous Improvement (5S, TPM,

Scrap Reduction etc.) of the Machines in the Fibre Optic Telecoms

Production Unit in Swindon - whole plant. Role includes the upkeep of EHS

Protocols and Quality Standards.

1997-2001: Pirelli Cables UK, South Wales- Senior Process Quality

Engineer, Optic Fibre Cable. - Turnover - 80-100 Million - Employees:

400+

Project Management role for 3 more SZ machines as below. Total output

increase from 1992 by 1120% - 2 billion metres of fibre cable per year.

Key engineer in the development of the new BT type approved cables,

enabling contract achievement.

Member of a Scrap Reduction Team saving up to 125,000 per month.( 1.5

million annually )

Key member of team achieving World Class Manufacturer's Award.

1992 -1997: Pirelli as above: Process then Senior Process Engineer on

Optic/Copper cable.

Project Management role for the requisition, installation and commissioning

of 2 x 1.5 million SZ Stranding machines, increasing the output from

25m/min to 70+ m/min cable manufacturing. ( A 2 x 280% increase ). Managed

teams of up to 25 people in total.

Carried out the training of the relevant personnel for the above machines,

in operation, materials control, IT and process handling.

1986 - 1992: From Apprentice to Process Engineer at Pirelli/STC, mostly

on copper cable covering all aspects of design, manufacture, maintenance,

quality, commissioning new plant and liaison with marketing and customers.
