Construction:
When I was 9, my father, who was an electrical engineer, taught me some basic wiring and then some plumbing.
When I was 10, my grandfather, who was a retired brick layer, taught me some masonry.
When I was in high school, I designed and built a chemistry bench in our basement and added some outlets and helped my dad put a shower in the basement.
In 1961, while working as a lab assistant, I wired and load tested a motor-generator for charging a large bank of storage cells (a big battery) used for the labs at the college I attended.
Over the years, I picked up more information about masonry, framing, finish carpentry, wiring, plumbing, building, construction, and repair.
Around 1971, I helped several friends building a house in Maine. I did framing and wiring. Two of my friends were licensed electricians and they helped me learn about the electrical wiring code.
In 1977, I re-shingled part of the roof my house with 15 pound felt and asphalt shingles. The next year, I replaced some rotted boards on another part of the roof of my house and re-roofed it also with 15 pound felt and asphalt shingles. Later, I changed the electrical service from several fuse boxes with a 60 amp main and no 20A circuits to a 200 amp breaker panel. Then I snaked 12 gauge wire to 2 windows for 20A outlets for air conditioners. The upstairs toilet was a bit wobbly, so I pulled it out, reinforced the floor and reset it. Several years later we added a large family room addition and I did all of the wiring and it was inspected. I installed a laundry sink in the basement of the new addition; I did the copper feeds and the PVC drain. The house had some old wiring that was not up to code and I replaced some of it. The gas water heater went, so I replaced it myself. A year later the gas boiler was replaced by a plumber. When it was inspected by the gas inspector, he noticed that he had not inspected the new gas water heater but he said it must be okay. A month later, a gas cock on the new boiler that had been inspected was leaking; I tightened it and it was fine. We use to go camping and we had a travel trailer. After the first winter I learned that you have to not only drain but blow out the copper tubing. So, I had to replace some of it.
In 1990 we bought a new house with an unfinished basement. A few years later I finished it. We had the furnace and water heater moved from the middle of the basement to one side, where I framed them in and framed in a bathroom next to it. I installed a hot water humidifier on the furnace. I installed a toilet and an exhaust fan and a vanity in the bathroom. I set the toilet and connected the copper pipes to a shower stall. Outside of the bathroom I plumbed a laundry tub and a washing machine hookup and put in a through-the-wall dryer vent. I put in lots of outlets and switches and overhead lights and wall sconces and track lighting. I hung blue-board on the wall studs and put paneling over the wall board on the bottom part and put on baseboard and hung doors and did all of the trim. I added an electrical box next to the breaker panel with a time clock and several relays and switches connected to two electric eyes outside to control 3 lighting circuits for inside and outside Christmas lights and regular outside lights. The outside lights go on from dusk to dawn if they are turned on. The Christmas lights go on from dusk to almost midnight. The inside lights go on before the outside lights as it gets dark inside before it gets dark outside. I also built 2 sheds outside, one raised (temporary) and one with cement block foundation and concrete floor and, of course, electrical outlets in both. Then I built a small (doghouse size) shed, away from the house, for my emergency generator. I have switches on basement doors that light indicator lamps to show that the doors are both closed and locked. And also on the permanent shed doors. I also tiled several floors in the house and the walls of the downstairs bathroom. And built other closets and did other wiring inside and outside.
