Hiring Manager:
This letter is in response to your recent postings for a Mechanical
Engineer.
I am interested in transitioning back to engineering after six years
as a patent attorney. I am currently training with CREO 2 / Pro-
Engineer. I am also working toward my project management professional
(PMP) certification.
I have worked in a variety of fields and projects during my ten plus
years of experience as an engineer. I have worked closely with vendors
developing prototypes and proof of concept models, as well as
developing cost proposals for new builds. My design experience
includes developing computer enclosures and rack mount systems, end-
effectors for silicon wafer sorting, as well as test fixtures for
circuit boards. Also, I developed cables and connectors to move data
signals and power from mother boards during burn-in testing. Finally,
I have worked for Lockheed Martin and Hughes Aircraft on prototype
development for a variety of projects.
My work in patent prosecution and analysis has exposed me to a variety
of technologies. In both fields, the subject matter was often outside
of my direct field of expertise. This required researching and
mastering the subject matter prior to drafting or analyzing a patent.
This has exposed me to a wide variety of technologies and taught me to
master them quickly.
As the Director of Engineering for IP Navigation Group, I managed the
work assignments and trained 16 patent analysts. In addition to
developing a training program for the analysts, I also developed the
workflows for analysis of patent portfolios within the company.
Finally, I spent 7 months setting up and staffing a new office in
Dublin, Ireland.
I believe that the combination of my management and engineering
experience is well-suited to the Mechanical Engineer position you
described. I have enclosed a copy of my resume with additional
information about my qualifications. Thank you for your
consideration. I look forward to receiving your reply.
Sincerely,
Todd Baughman
