THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORT & MAIN ROADS (TMR) – WIDE BAY BURNETT REGION, BUNDABERG

Civil Engineer (Graduate Rotation) - Program, Delivery and Operations (2.5 years)

Project and contract administration experience including strengthening and widening of the Bruce Highway using insitu-cement stabilization and re-construction of concrete boat ramp. My involvement included the following:

oQuality Assurance, Safety, Keeping daily Construction Diaries, On-site monitoring from subgrade to road base stabilization, pavement seal and various methodology for quality testing;

oExperience and understanding with Project Cost Claims, Variations to the Contract, Scheduled Rates and end of month Project Forecasting;

Hydraulic flow and velocity calculation of both steel and concrete pipe culverts within the state-controlled road network for rehabilitation;

Surveying fieldwork assistance including Digital Terrain Modeling, road leveling, GPS positioning and location of services for 12D input (e.g. for Culvert assessment, assist in engineering future road upgrades, Telstra, Optic fibres, water mains, power lines, power poles and traffic light signals);

Preparation of Structural Management Plans (SMP) using RoadTek bridge inspections for approval Brisbane Asset Management (BAM) and for concrete and steel culverts;

Development Engineer (Program Delivery and Operations) – (1.5 years)

During my Development Engineer role within the Development Assessment team (Referral Agency) for low to high risk development applications, my skills include:-

Assessment of Consultant Storm Water Reports according to the Queensland Urban Drainage Manual, the rational method used to calculate run-off and determination of culvert sizes (hydraulic calculation), approval of lawful point of discharge and onsite storm water detention systems;

Assessment of Traffic and Road Impact Assessments submitted by traffic consultants according to GARID, traffic distribution and generation rates;

Assessment of proposed designs for road intersection upgrades using the Road Planning and Design Manual e.g. turn treatment warrants and standards.

Noise Impacts according to noise standards and Queensland Noise Building Code;

Preparation of Advice and Referral Agency letters for development approval and to request further information to applicant, local government agencies and consultant engineers;

Liaising with Brisbane and Bundaberg Main Roads road designers, town planners and traffic engineers for technical advice;

Construction Safety documentation and issuing of letters including Approval to Commence Work to the principal contractor and a Certificate for Completion of Work issued once inspected;

Assisted roadwork inspectors on site inspections for accesses, culverts, site and safety distances and also asphalt construction projects on the Bruce Highway;

Design of road signage for installation on state-controlled roads according to MUTCD, Australian Standards and the Roadside Advertising Guide.

I ensured quality and safe traffic management during the upgrade of highway, local roads and bridge overpasses, hence gaining the following:-

Hands on experience in the installation of traffic control devices (E.g. VMS, temporary signage, portable concrete barriers & triton crash barrier systems);

A keen eye for detail in the inspection of traffic control devices and road defects;

Effective communication through instruction to supervisors and labourers to close out defects according to standards, provisions and relevant TCP’s (Traffic Control Plans);

An appreciation for stakeholder and government processes by means of applying for road permits and Traffic Control Plans to conduct construction activities. i.e. state and local government;

Organisational skills through booking for Traffic Control and Police services;

Perseverance and coordination qualities gained by keeping up to date registers of safety barrier quantities and movements for future forecasting;
