PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: NURSE PRACTITIONER
Horizon Medical Clinic & Midway Medical Clinic, Cullman, AL February 2013 – September 2014
Family Nurse Practitioner
In February 2013, I accepted a Family Nurse Practitioner position with the founders of the above named Cullman County rural health clinics to supervise the startup of the clinics and to become the sole primary care provider at both clinics. The two clinics were open one-half day each, morning and afternoon, Monday – Friday. At all times, I was under the supervision of an off-site collaborative physician and an off-site covering physician. I also provided 24/7 on-call coverage. In addition to providing routine chronic and acute/urgent primary family care to my patients, following are some additional achievements:
Developed a list of physician referral contacts which included Gastroenterology, Urology, Cardiology, Pulmonary, Endocrinology, Pediatrics, and Orthopedics specialists.
Developed a working relationship with the local Hospitalist. This physician and his team would admit my patients for inpatient care when appropriate and necessary. I would then resume patient care after hospitalization.
Directed and coordinated activities of medical assistant/clerical staff. Also supervised the day-to-day running of the office including paying monthly bills, building operations/maintenance, ordering of all clinic supplies, and arranging for regular janitorial services.
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE: REGISTERED NURSE
UAB Hospital, Birmingham, Alabama October 2014 - Present
Registered Nurse – Critical Care Staffing Pool
Currently I work full time as a critical care float pool RN for UAB Hospital. This position is similar to a travel RN position, in that on any given shift I will be sent to work in one of UAB’s eight ICUs, the PACU or the ER as the need for additional staff arises. This position reflects confidence on the part of UAB in my critical care RN experience.
UAB Hospital, Birmingham, Alabama August 2008 – February 2013
Registered Nurse – Surgical Intensive Care Unit
In this ICU, I cared for very high-acuity patients, including liver and kidney transplant patients, and all types of unstable post-surgical vascular, renal, gastrointestinal, orthopedic, gynecological, and oncology patients. The majority of patients in this unit required ventilators, hemodynamic monitoring, multiple IV fluids, wound care, and tube feeds. Many patients also required vasopressors, insulin and/or heparin drips, multiple blood products, continuous dialysis (CRRT), and occasionally paralytics.
UAB Hospital, Birmingham, Alabama June 2004 – August 2008
Registered Nurse – Level III Neonatal ICU and Continuing Care Nursery
During this time I worked in UAB’s Level III Regional NICU caring for premature infants from 24 weeks gestation through full-term high-risk neonates. This job involved caring for ventilated neonates, administration of medications according to patient weight, and continuous electronic bedside monitoring. After approximately one year, I transferred under the same unit manager to the Level II NICU called the Continuing Care Nursery and continued working there for the next three years. In that unit I continued to care for premature infants and sick full-term neonates who still required continuous monitoring, IV fluid and medication administration, blood administration, tube feedings, and bottle feedings. I also assisted mothers with breast feeding, taught infant care, reinforced infant CPR, and taught parents discharge information.
