Contractor to Landis+Gyr conducting detailed firmware testing for Gridstream smart grid metering equipment for Tokyo Electric Power Corp. Create automated tests in C# via MS Test Manager, Visual Studio and proprietary tools to uncover critical product defects in Concentrator and Endpoint multi-networked gear.

Team member designing, implementing and testing firmware for embedded processors in digital energy meters. Firmware communicates via ZigBee with various power consumption and reporting devices. Work performed in standard C for a Renesas RX63N processor using E20 emulation environment.

Design, implementation, test and support of company’s Platinum Plus interactive gaming product. Creation of firmware to drive TI-based graphics engine, external serial communications and application software to add several new features including QR Code generation, visual color pattern test displays and updated printer support. With Luxcore Networks, initial stages of creating fully-redundant high-availability Management and Control System for optically-based high-speed internet switch. Created emulations of MEMS hardware components then in development to evaluate and iteratively draft requirements for proposed operating system supplements. Evaluated GNU compilers and various commercial embedded operating systems (pSOS, RTEMS) to determine suitability against system timing and throughput requirements. Evaluation software written primarily in C++.

With Roche Diagnostics, used object-oriented methodologies to design and begin implementation of embedded software for updated blood-gas analyzer. Software controlled complex chemical analysis using discrete I/O and reported results to networked devices via LAN interface using HTML/XML. Developed in GNU C/C++ using StP modeling tool for a PowerPC / RTEMS target.

With Symbol Technologies, developed and integrated custom wireless communications and power management features into company’s next-generation mobile monitor/ control platform. Target was a 486/PII running embedded Win3.1. Development used C++ and SourceSafe.

With Automated Logic Corp, designed and incorporated BACNet UDP socket and packet distribution support into embedded components of a PowerPC-based building automation control system running under pSOS. Also added DHCP support. Work was in Diab C/C++.

With Scientific-Atlanta, developed an embedded command / response monitor to test and configure new hardware components based on newly developed Sparc-based Explorer 2000 digital CATV set-top boxes. Created monitor to interact with existing production test-set jig apparatus using RS-232 serial and broadband ethernet connections. Work was in Cygnus C and C++.

With Axxiom Communications, created support to extract call data records from remote telephone switches using X.25 into a proprietary data management / fraud detection system. Software developed using Borland C and C++.

With Union Camp Corp, designed and incorporated software updates into embedded paper mill finishing-line control system. System controlled transport and labeling of bulk rolls of kraft paper as they were milled and spooled by mill apparatus. Work was in Vax C.

Lockheed Martin Aeronautics. Staff Embedded Engineer. Marietta, GA. April 1992 to Sept 1998.

- Served as Lead Engineer, C130-J Air Vehicle Systems Software. Responsible for original design, implementation and FAA test certification of kernel components and operating system of 3-node multiprocessor secure network of mission computers managing avionics, displays, throttle controls, radio communications.

- Led team of 6 in object-oriented detailed design, implementation, integration and test of high-throughput, very-high-reliability safety critical RTOS kernel supporting lock-step interactivity and communication between 100 application processes and 150 aircraft hardware devices controlling all aspects of flight operations in a triple-redundant multiprocessor architecture. Work was in Aonix Ada-83 & 95.

- Developed kernel components to support deterministic process scheduling, I/O management, software and hardware fault detection and correction, exception and interrupt management, load shedding and on-the-fly dynamic system reconfiguration. Code developed 90% in Aonix Ada and 10% assembly language for MIPS R5000 series processors. Prototype software developed in Telesoft C.

- Created deterministic load shedding / restoration methodology in event of critical component failure, hardware or software. System would proactively probe for anomalous behavior and predicatively respond to hard and soft failures at all levels of criticality.

- Designed, developed and tested software/firmware supporting power-up bootstrap, processor/memory/device initialization, continuous hardware and system built-in-test, dynamic process scheduling management and various low-level device drivers which interacted directly with controllers, ASICs and FPGAs.

- Contributor in early design cycle decisions: hardware/software partitioning, development and test methodologies, software development standards, implementation language, schedule and milestones. Employed SEI Consortium Requirements Engineering (CoRE) methodology.

- Led team of 9 software engineers to develop, integrate and successfully test embedded flight software for a fire-and-forget millimeter-wave self-guided missile system. Software operated in tightly coupled network of 13 Motorola 68K and Fujitsu MB8764 Digital Signal Processors.

- Led design team developing system and software requirements for production phase of MLRS project employing real-time structured analysis (RTSA) using the Teamwork set of CASE tools.

- Developed real-time executive kernel that supported process scheduling, interrupt management and inter-process communications that supported requirements of ground detection, guidance and control, target detection and target tracking teams.

Lockheed Space Operations. Specialist Engineer. Kennedy Space Center, FL. July 1984 to July 1985.

- Conducted feasibility study to modernize NASA STS Space Shuttle support software environment by downsizing mainframe-based compilers and development tools and porting a large set of supporting applications from Modcomp IV minicomputers to a network of HP/Apollo workstations. Work was in C and used GNU lex and yacc tools.

Initial formation of company’s Software Engineering department. Organized processes and methodologies for development of embedded control systems for laser machine tool products sold to government and industrial manufactures. Introduced new microprocessors, updated tools and languages to greatly improve engineering efficiency. In spare time, personally created visual part-localizer system in C for Motorola MC680x0 single board computer using an early digital video interface. Also introduced voice synthesis warning to safety enclosure intrusion system. Marketed company’s products to clients.

Scientific Systems Services, Inc. Melbourne, FL. MTS/Project Manager. June 1977 to June 1983.

First professional job. Worked initially as Member of Technical Staff with design and development team on number of projects including creation of custom minicomputer operating systems, industrial process control systems, mine warfare training simulators, oil pipeline control systems and digital image processing and page engraving systems for rotogravure printing. Clients included a variety of commercial and government entities. Became team leader of single projects and ultimately managed several concurrent industrial control projects.
