Masters Practicum: Historic Remains of the Sangamon Ordnance Plant:
In March of 1942, The Secretary of War developed land and subsequently began the operation of two
Ordnance Plants in Sangamon County, Illinois. On the 12 September 1943, the two Plants merged as the
Sangamon Ordnance Plant and were decommissioned on 24 August 1945. Much remains of the Plant today,
including structures, roads and water lines. The paper uses geographic information systems (GIS) to
delineate what remains are still standing, what has fallen or been removed, and any potential subsurface
Archaeological remains that may exist. The document is on file with the Illinois State Museum and the Illinois
State Archaeological Site File.
