Michael Rhyan Morris
Objective Secure a systems administration position with a progressive company that
will utilize my skills, knowledge and experience, while allowing me some
flexibility to finish my degree.
Work August 2012 - February 2015, Insure-Rite, Inc.
Experience Salt Lake City, UT
Systems Administrator
Responsible for all computer, phone and networking systems within the
company, including planning, architecture, purchasing, installation and
maintenance. This is a mixed environment of Windows (2000, 2003, 2008,
and 2012) and Linux (Centos) servers, used for SQL & MySQL databases,
applications servers, FTP & SFTP, web servers, and a Hadoop cluster.
This environment is a mix of stand alone servers and virtualized
servers, utilizing a VMWare cluster and a few using Hyper-V. Including
a PBX w/ Fax Server system and a high availability system with fail
overs that had to have 100% up time. Firewalls, switching, certificate
management, remote access, VPN connections, network and server security,
penetration testing, server hardening, and desktop support were also
included in my responsibilities.
Implemented 24/7 hardware and process monitoring using Syslog, SNMP, WMI
and Zenoss, which in turn identified several issues with hardware
running at maximum capacity and allowed for alerting through email
before issues start. For the few elements that I could not monitor with
these systems, I wrote custom monitoring scripts in Python with email
alerting and logging. Eliminating unplanned outages for nearly two
years. Also implemented an IDS (intrusion detection system) and tied
both the IDS and Zenoss (systems monitoring) into the main ticketing
system, allowing for easy documentation and record keeping of all issues
that arise. Also, using Zenoss and cacti, I created a network
weathermap showing the real time flow of data across the network.
Wrote and created all technology and data security responses for a
winning RFP with the State of Utah. This included diagramming,
explaining, and updating all details about the existing network and
detailing how we were going to meet the new requirements required by the
RFP. I was personally commended by the CEO for my outstanding written
skills and my ability to diagram and explain complex systems in such a
way that they were easy to understand. I have been told by many that my
Visio diagrams are the best they've ever seen.
I re-worked the power in the racks to all use 208v, and utilized the
redundant power that the data center provides to correct the power to
every possible server in the racks. I did this without a single
production server having to be shut down, and in the middle of the
business day.
Also, I implemented new policies on backup rotations, phone etiquette,
password handling, internet usage, email safety, quarterly updating,
yearly security scans, and penetration tests. Moved DHCP from a
residential grade access point to an actual server. Turned up internal
DNS, WINS, an internal WIKI, code repository and ticketing system.
Replaced un-managed 10/100MB switches with managed L2 10/100/1000MB
switches. Upgraded residential grade wireless access point to two
commercial grade access points, allowing for multiple SSID's, a guest
network, using Active Directory and Radius controlled access.
May 2012 - June 2012, Precision Sleep Services
Salt Lake City, UT
PC / Network Maintenance & VPN Tunnel Configuration (1 Month Contract)
Cleaned and reconfigured 40+ PC's and 3 sites network configurations,
including virus removal, shares configuration, firewall
re-configuration, wireless installation and safe browser habits
training. Also I configured VPN tunnels between three locations for
secure file and printer sharing, this required re-working the IP schemes
of the networks at two of the locations, and moved them away from
transferring files using burned CD's to instantaneous file transfers.
This sped up their ability to bill by nearly a week, and increased their
overall file management and monitoring.
2011 - 2012, Zonerecycling.com
Salt Lake City, UT
Information Technologies Specialist
I was brought in to streamline and computerize the entire company. I
started by moving sales from manually listing each item on eBay to an
online store saving more than 30% on all sales. Using the online store
I was able to build an inventory and warehouse management system and
streamlined the acquisition of new products using the existing bar
coding system that was already on the parts. This in turn, also gave
management a real picture of what they had, and what it was all worth.
Finally, utilizing Amazon's sales API I was able to list most products
on both our existing online store and on Amazon automatically.
