Career & Achievements to Date
Quality Engineer Marietta Corp/KIK Custom Products Sept 13 to Mar 15
* Lead the reintroduction of OTC product to customer specification. Managed CAPA and technical projects to deliver a profitable business unit. Worked with the customer’s technical, commercial and QA groups to understand and deliver their requirements.
Process Engineer Molecular Products Oct 11 to Jun 13
* Led technical projects to transform the manufacturing culture to Lean. Operated with the shop floor to implement statistical process control on the continuous manufacturing plant.
* Established standards and specifications for manufacturing repeatability.
Site Engineering Manager Silver Spoon Mar 09 to Apr 11
* Led the engineering team to achieve customer and industry compliance. Implemented a site overhaul program and a maintenance management system which increased line utilization by 20%. Led capital investment program for the site.
* Achieved exceptional results in National Milling exams to understand milling process and deliver business savings on new crop transition and operational efficiencies with purifiers.
Senior Technical Manager GlaxoSmithKline May 00 to Mar 09
* Managed the successful technical development of a high speed packaging project to achieve filling speeds of 750doses/min. This exceeded the original target speed of 600doses/min. Led a matrix team with R&D, Commercial, Engineering, Manufacturing & suppliers to deliver a novel process. Although the process was novel, the project relied on a traditional packaging presentation. Took personal ownership for the success of the technical risk reduction and managed the technology development as this became a $47M implementation.
Managed multi-disciplinary technical teams to understand the processes and develop manufacturing solutions to each of the issues. The teams included engineering companies, internal departments and academic consultants.
Championed the process understanding for the powder blending and distribution system to avoid the segregation that had led to intermittent batch failure for many years. Decided to use bin blending and then designed for mass flow through the rest of the process to achieve a very capable process. Managed a disparate team with differing motivations to deliver a robust process, quickly achieving high efficiencies once it went in production.
Took accountability for the outcome of the technical work. Funded and managed the team that developed the new processes. Took the project from feasibility through to full industrialization through stages of testing and development. Owned the deliverables for each technical stage gate and signed off the results for each stage of development.
* Managed the feasibility, proof of concept and industrialization of a late stage customization project for Aquafresh toothpaste. The equipment was introduced in production at Clifton, NJ.
The issue was to develop late stage dosing and mixing of color and flavor into three color toothpaste with a variety of different flavors. The process had been designed as a large batch process and the objective was to turn it into a continuous, flexible process. The benefits were lower cost and quick delivery of new products to market.
Led a team including manufacturing, engineering and R&D to specify a user requirement for feasibility work. Led the team to evaluate and select a technology partner for the project and then deliver a proof of concept program within eight weeks. Secured the funding for the design and build of a prototype system. Used mathematical modeling and system testing in parallel to understand and problem solve the process. One of the surprising barriers to delivery was the pulsation from a variety of industrial pumps that was more significant that the manufacturers understood. This was because our sampling frequency was much higher than normally used for testing. The problem was overcome by using mathematical modeling to test a software fix for the pulsation. This was successful and was used to build a very compact system using minimal mechanical parts and deliver a very capable dosing and mixing process.
* Project managed the development of two novel continuous tablet coating processes. Secured funding for the technical work by selling the vision of the benefits within the company. Worked closely with R&D, Procurement & Manufacturing to turn both medium scale and small scale batch processes into continuous processes.
CMMS Implementation Manager GlaxoWellcome Oct 98 to May00
* Successfully project managed the implementation of a validated Computerized Maintenance Management System across three secondary sites for regulatory & Y2K compliance.
Engineering Team Manager Glaxo Jul 94 to Oct 98
* Recruited & managed a multi-disciplinary team of 30 technicians delivering projects, maintenance and training for a novel dry-powder-inhaler manufacturing facility. The full engineering service enabled the launch of Advair Diskus.
Delivered a “Reliability Centered Maintenance” program to increase line efficiency and to eliminate unnecessary failures through redesign of the core machine function.
Area Manager H.J.Heinz Dec 87 to July 94
* Implemented a "Reliability Centered Maintenance" program to increase the line utilization by 5%. Championed the inclusive, team based understanding of maintenance to optimize the planned preventative work on site.
* Managed a multi-disciplinary team of 25 people on night shift for the start up of a £40M food processing plant. Implemented an Organizational Development model to enable the fastest canning line for human food products to go into production around the clock.
Production Manager Procter & Gamble May 85 to Dec 87
* Managed 30 operators, tradesmen and technicians on shift packing detergent powders at high speed. Introduced the first 12 technicians into production roles within the company as part of the Organizational Development program.
Assistant Plant Engineer BICC Aug 83 to May 85
* Implemented a microprocessor based data logging system on cable drying plant.
Graduate Trainee Scottish Engineering Training Scheme Jul 82 to Jul 83
* Worked at a Nuclear Power Station, a Research Laboratory, a Building Site, and did acoustic testing for a transformer manufacturer.
