PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE
AEROSTAR DIVISION OF RAVEN INDUSTRIES
Manufacturer of high altitude research balloons
Quality Manager, Sulphur Springs, TX 2005 -
2015
Managed all Quality functions at the Sulphur Springs plant. Assured all
product requirements were met and documented. During my watch, the plant
achieved an unprecedented success rate with these very large balloons made
from very thin materials. Worked with the Engineering and Production
departments to develop new small super pressure balloons. Managed five
employees in the quality department (two salary, three hourly).
. Vastly improved the relationship between Aerostar and our biggest
(toughest) customer. Changed from a confrontational relationship to a
cooperative relationship that worked together to improve their products.
. Managed the department to assure all products had proper quality support.
Made sure all quality employees were properly trained and equipped.
. Introduced Statistical techniques when analyzing quality measures.
Concentrated on process capability and ANOVA.
. Worked with Engineering and Production departments to establish
specifications for new products. Used statistical techniques to verify
the specs.
. Created spreadsheets and databases to monitor the results and trends of
most quality measures.
. Created databases that documented production/quality activities, and
allowed traceability of components.
. Developed near real-time reporting of repairs to balloons. Allowed for
faster response to production and/or equipment problems.
. Monitored the inventory of all balloon film and determined when new film
was ordered. I was required by our customer to attend all balloon film
runs at the supplier.
. Worked with the film supplier to closely monitor the resin quality and
production processes to significantly reduce film flaws.
TYCO HEALTHCARE / KENDALL (formerly Sherwood Medical) 1981 - 2003
Manufacturer of disposable medical supplies.
Process Validation Engineer, Commerce, TX 1993 -
2003
Responsible for the validation status of all processes within a non-union
facility employing 400 people. Other responsibilities included qualifying
alternate materials, resolving specification discrepancies, troubleshooting
process problems within the plant, and managing Six Sigma projects. The
validation group consisted of myself and four Validation Technicians.
Successfully completed Six Sigma Black Belt training and had two projects
underway. Projected savings for these projects exceeded $210,000.
Created and implemented a new injection mold validation program that set
tighter control of the molding processes, thereby reducing variation in the
processes.
Created a specification review team to investigate and reconcile
specification discrepancies found in the manufactured product. This action
permitted timely completion of subsequent validation activities.
Effectively worked in both the Engineering and Quality Assurance
departments. Coordinated two plant consolidation projects, and developed
inspection/measurement techniques that improved the accuracy of measuring
components.
Coordinated the testing and qualification of a new raw material for a major
component. The conversion to this new material resulted in a savings of
$40,000 per year.
Experienced with FDA cGMP and ISO requirements. Knowledgeable of the
Quality Systems approach used by the FDA and ISO agencies.
Industrial Engineer, ST. Joseph, MO 1981 -
1993
Responsible for classical Industrial Engineering duties which included time-
studies, line balancing, line layouts, and method studies for a union
facility that employed 700 people. Other responsibilities included
developing manufacturing costs for all new and revised products, assisting
with the annual capital and cost reduction budgets, working with Project
Engineers to automate production and designing layouts for new products.
Effectively worked with members of the engineering department and
production departments to achieve a total annual savings that ranged from
$800,000 to $1,400,000 per year.
Coordinated efforts with the plant department managers to develop the
annual capital and cost reduction budgets for the plant. Tracked capital
spending and cost reductions efforts, and reported the results monthly.
Effectively used an IBM System 34/36. Used Mapics II to maintain
item master, product structure, routing and work center files.
Prepared financial justification and purchased the personal computer
hardware, software and printers for the plant.
