Pianist Hong Ma, born in China, began to study piano at 6 years’ old with Bing-zhen Wang, Shi-gu
Zhang and Jin Zhang from Central Conservatory of Music.
In 2007, Ms. Ma was admitted by China Conservatory of Music- Piano Department. Her collegiate
studies were with Qiu Wang from Berlin Conservatory, Dr. Mei-na Yu, pianist from Hannover
Conservatory, Chang-xin Guan from Texas Christian University, and Ming-sun Zhou and Hai-bo Wang,
Professors in Piano Pedagogy Area from Beijing Normal University. She earned Bachelor’s Degree with
GPA 3.75 and successful Solo Recital in Beijing Concert Hall.
After college, Ms. Ma continued to study for a Master Degree at the University of Michigan with
Professor Christopher Harding, Associate Professor of Piano Performance and Chamber Music, and
Chair of the Piano Department. Within 2 years’ Master study, she continually kept Piano Performance
Grade A record and she was awarded Graduate Fellowship with GPA 3.75.
Ms. Ma has participated in some excellent festivals like Piano Festival “Art of Piano” held by the
University Of Cincinnati College Of Music; University of Florida International Piano Festival,
Chautauqua Institution in New York, and the Rebecca Penney Piano Festival in Tampa, Florida. And she
was given Master Classes by many excellent pianist from University of Cincinnati, New England
Conservatory, San Francisco Conservatory, University of Maryland, University of Minnesota, University
of Texas at Austin, Michigan State University, Eastman School of Music, Indiana university, Temple
university, Cleveland Institute of Music, and University of Houston, including Awadagin Pratt, Russell
Sherman, Yoshikazu Nagai, Sharon Mann, Mayron Tsong, Lydia Artymiw, Panayis Lyras and Deborah
Moriarty.
Ms. Ma has given frequent solo, concerto, and chamber music performances in Washington, D.C., New
York, Colorado, Ohio, Michigan and China. Her recitals have included concerto with symphony orchestra
at the University of Michigan, Master Recital at Stamp Auditorium, and some other Chamber Recitals
with Strings, Winds and Percussion. As the pianist at University Philharmonic Symphony, Ms. Ma has
presented numerous Symphony Performances with Orchestra at the Hill Auditorium.
Previously while in China, Ms. Ma was awarded First-Class Scholarship each year by China
Conservatory of Music and she once was invited by China-U.S. Foundation to perform at the New Year's
Eve Party, with highly commended by Zu-qiang Wu, the former President at Central Conservatory of
Music and famous violinist Zhong-guo Sheng. She has additionally performed numerous times in China.
As an active student, she always participated in Beijing International Piano Festival each year to pursue
professional study and volunteered to take part in the World Music Education Conference hold in China
Conservatory of Music.
Ms. Ma has been teaching for many years. In China, she served as a Children part-time Piano Teacher in
the major Music Schools and Training Centers in Beijing, like National Library of Music Training Center,
Bao Huiqiao Piano Training School, Jiang Jie Music Training School etc. Her students once won
Children Group 1st Prize and 2ND Prize in “2014 The Ninth Chopin International Piano Competition
China Area” and got “Excellent” in Piano Grade Examination Stage Ten (The Highest Level in China)
etc. Her teaching also revived positive feedback from professors in Central Conservatory of Music. She
takes full advantage of her knowledge and comprehensive ability to help each student to solve problems,
to overcome difficulties. She masters effective teaching methods based on many years’ experience, and
finds out different teaching strategies, to help students how to play piano in right ways. She is also good
at teaching in English and Chinese, which also helps those students who have interests in learning
Chinese.
Before graduation, she served as Piano Accompanist in Instrumental/Vocal Studio and different kinds of
Ensemble, like Choir Ensemble and University Philharmonic Symphony in China Conservatory of Music
and The University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. She also did other off campus accompanying work, like
church, wedding and other social events.
