RELEVANT EXPERIENCE & ACHIEVEMENTS
Sargassum Early Advisory System (SEAS) Project, Texas A&M University at Galveston, Galveston, TX 2012 to Present
Research Team Member
Serve as member of 5-student team challenged to study/predict the periodic mass landings of Sargassum (seaweed)
across the Texas Gulf Coast and aid coastal managers with minimizing its impact on beach tourism through increased
preparedness. Use imagery from USGS Landsat Data Continuity Mission (LDCM) satellites to track movement of
Sargassum over 8-day periods from the Gulf of Mexico to the Atlantic Ocean and back.
Project Highlights:
NASA DEVELOP Program (2014): Enlisted to monitor Sargassum via NASA satellites and assess its benefits on
coastal ecosystems in Mississippi; presented we ll-received project findings to fellow researchers via Skype.
st
Texas Parks & Wildlife (2014): Hired to evaluate Sargassum at Galveston’s 61 Street Fishing Pier (“Triangle of
Seaweed”); waded out into the water to measure depth on weekly basis, tested samp les to determine composition,
and observed growth and/or decomposition rates in saltwater and freshwater environments.
Texas Academy of Science (2013): Analyzed Gulf of Mexico as fertile nursery ground for Sargassum; earned Texas
Academy of Science Participation Award.
Contributed to SEAS outreach efforts to area high schools from 2012 to 2014; spoke before groups of students,
answered questions, recruited participants, and demonstrated use of USGS research database.
Between 2012 and 2013, increased total delivered advisories from 38 to 73 and improved accuracy from 85% to 97%;
additionally expanded forecasting reach to the Caribbean Sea.
Gave project presentations for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and NASA’s Gulf of Mexico
Initiative Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences (GOMI ROSES) in 2013 as well as Texas General
Land Office in 2012.
