CLASS PROJECT
Senior Design Capstone Project (Renewable Energy)
In this two-semester project sunlight energy is collected through a sunlight absorbing device, the energy retrieved is then maximized to its full potential, that energy is then converted as direct current to a load which can be used immediately or stored. The outcome of this project resulted in a successful attempt of collecting the sun’s energy and converting it into useable electrical energy. This project served as a prototype to the real deal photovoltaic system and was completed mostly on school computers. Device communication played a vital role in reaching success and completing this project. As a group member my job was to learn everything there was to know about the maximum power point tracker device. This device monitored energy collected from the sun and maximized it. After much research I chose the purturb and observe algorithm, one of the simplest methods existing to run the mppt effectively. Hardships encountered in this project included writing code for the algorithm and implementing the code into the Field programmable gate array, FPGA. I received help from an instructor who specialized in computers and programming. Shortly after the completion of the project I wrote a few paragraphs regarding what I learned and the hardships faced. After writing and submitting my portion of the project I worked with fellow group members, proof reading and editing the entire document. My final grade for the project was a "B".
