EDUCATION California State University 1998-2005

Sacramento, CA

Graduated with my Bachelor of Arts Degree in Spanish, with a minor in Mexican Anthropology. In the

summer semester of 1998, I lived with a host family in Cuernavaca, Mexico. The family spoke no English

so I was able to perfect my language skills. It was part of the Bilingual/Bicultural Educational Program.

Summer 1997

California State University - Arranged to take a cultural experience course in African American Studies on

campus. There were local guest speakers, local politicians and musical entertainers that gave workshops

and lectures. There were group activities and sensitivity classes, as well as art and culture demonstrations.

Summer 1996

California State University - Became involved in a cultural experience class in Russian. We met with dig-

nitaries from the Russian communities in Sacramento and Marysville. The class had many things to offer

such as a basic language course, historical lessons, movies, art projects, and knowledge of the unrest in

Russia because of grave political issues. The class was given for continuing education credits. This class

was quite informative and gained much knowledge in the areas of culture, religion and the arts.

Summer 1995

California State University - the foreign language department offered a class in Asian American studies. I

thought it would give me the opportunity to learn more about Asian culture, history, art and language.

What I received was a wonderful, make believe adventure into the world of South East Asian, China,

Mongolia and parts of the Phillipines and Viet Nam. The guest speakers included Pamela Wu who at that

time was an intern for Channel 3 news. Lisa Ling, foreign correspondent for a major network and finally,

Than Lee who is the owner of the Lemon Grass Restaurants here in Sacramento. The class studied art,

music, historic traditions and in some cases, languages from Viet Nam, Philipines and China. It was a

wonderful class. This too offered continuing education units.

Summer 1994

California State University - my first experience in taking a culture class was the Latino workshop. This

was the class that made me realize that my destiny was to teach Spanish. There were food experts to

dmonstrate the differences between dishes from Spain, Guatamala, Honduras and Mexico. The class

participated in historical dance, customs, traditions, famous people of the Spanish speaking world, litera-

ture and music. Of all the classes I took over the five summers, this had the most impact on my life.

1987-1995

American River College, Sacramento, CA - Decided to return to college after my family was established. I

took two classes each semester until I was comfortable enough to take a full day of courses. All of my

undergraduate requirements were completed where I was able to transfer to California State University as

a junior. While attending, I became a paid English tutor in the Learning Resource Center, on campus for

students who were having problems with writing skills. After two years, I finally completed my general

education coursework.
