As a time served Plumber/ Mechanical PipeFitter/Welder which I found a very challenging job, as you
were always changing what you were doing and on different sites.
After completing my apprenticeship, I went on to do courses in Arc welding which I received a very
high grade. My duties included working in Boiler houses, plantrooms, tank rooms and on plumbing
projects. My initial experience in electrical work stood to me here as I had to deal with electrical controls
on Boilers and heating systems and also on ventilation.
Also while working in Boiler houses I got to work on the gas, as most of the boilers would have gas fired
boilers. It would have been industrial gas systems I would have worked on, mostly welded red band gun
barrel pipe. So I would have an amount of experience working on natural gas in industrial and a small
amount in domestic
In my lather years with this company I also looked after projects for them in the role as foreman, and
would have been involved in the setting up of the job and also had an input into the design of it, and then
had the responsibility of getting the job ready for handing over to clients.
I also had the opportunity to work with the maintenance side of the company from time to time when
they were stuck or if I was on the job.
Some of the projects I have worked on include East Point Buisness Park, Bishop Street College,
D.C.U, Baldonnell Aerodrome, Dublin Airport, Irish Life EBS Townsend Street, Trinity College to name
but a few.
I went on then to specialize in Medical and Industrial gas systems which brought me to all corners of the
country.
My duties included here setting up all jobs that I was on having to order all equipment and plant and, plan
and execute the job from start to finish.
It was a very demanding job yet It was rewarding, as you were meeting a lot of people as you were
dealing directly with clients and also doing a bit of traveling. I was also involved very much with the
design of some of these jobs, as on some occasions the medical or industrial gases would have been
forgotten about in the initial planning of the job, and is where my experience would have come in.
I had been a supervisor with this company for 7 years, and had gained a lot of experience of dealing with
people and sorting out problems, I also gained some more experience in the electrical end of gas systems
and their controls. Having to deal with alarms, pressure switches, solenoids, manifolds and plant and a lot
more, which also brought me into the maintenance area as sometimes things would not work, so you
were the only person there so you had to deal with the problem. Maintenance would have been an
ongoing part of my job.
A lot of my work saw me in Hospitals,Laboratories in Colleges, and Laboratories in state Facilities all
over the country, also vacumn packed food plants.
Some of the projects I have worked on in this company are, Trinity College, D.C.U, U.C.D
Athlone IT, Weather Station Valencia Island, Several Teagasc Facilities, Mercy Hospital Cork,
Galway Clinic, Portiuncal Hospital Ballinasloe, University Hospital Galway, Guinesse,s
State Labs, Agri Labs, Fisheries in Abbottstown and also their new Facility in Back Weston, and many
more, to more to mention.
AT present I am working in LMETB formally FAS as a Welding & Plumbing Instructor, taking classes
from a basic level up to Advanced pipe and plate, and also Plumbing Phase 2 classes.
I have worked with Engineering Inspection Specialists on a part time basis.
I have obtained a Batchelor of Arts Degree in Training & Education through the National University of
Ireland in Galway in 2010.
I successfully completed my welding inspector training with TWI in Abington, in Jan 2014.
I have also completed an ECDL course on computers, and am competent with, Microsoft word, Excel,
Outlook, and other computer applications.
I have of late being involved with the new Pipefitting Apprenticeship which is starting to gather
momentum in relation to registered Apprentices.
